I'm not sure I'd agree. With so many seats flying empty, the incremental cost to the airline of flying an award passenger is much less than the book liability. On the other hand, when you redeem for merchandise, the airline has to acquire that merchandise (and pay for it? or give more credits and thus incur additional liabilities?) rather than "taking it out of inventory".

I'd think the better way to help the airlines is to redeem awards for flights.
