Web-only air fares grounded?
It seems that the web-only air fares have been grounded.
United Airlines, American Airlines, US Airways and TWA have all suspended offering discounted fares through their Web sites. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
Alaska Airlines is still offering them http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Some of these new measures are really sounding silly. WHY webfares?
|
The casualties seem to be last-minute "weekend special" fares (leave Saturday, return Monday/Tuesday). There are still fares offering a 5% discount for Internet purchase, for example.
|
IMHO the last minute fares were probably suspended because ...
A. They had other things to do this week besides decide which routes to put on sale B. With all the cancellations, its silly to sell something so cheaply if youre going to have to turn around and reprotect them at a much higher cost on another flight or carrier. ------------------ Have a great day!! ~~Missy~~ |
I suppose it's possible that the airlines want to present the bleakest possible face to Congress while they're asking for multi-billion dollar handouts. Having occupancy rates at the lowest possible levels wouldn't hurt their requests.
I wonder if that's why we're hearing warnings that we must arrive three or four hours early at the airport, when actual experiences seem to indicate that in general an extra half hour seems to cover the additional delays. I hate to ascribe such Machivellian motivation to the airlines, but otherwise you'd think they'd WANT to sell some of those empty seats. |

National Airlines has this unbelivable low prices on their website
LAX, SFO - LAS $25.00 roundtrip. Yes! RT not OW LAX, SFO - ORD, DFW $75.00 RT LAX, SFO - MIA, JFK, EWR, PHL $100.00 RT Havn't seen prices this low for a long time. Check http://www.nationalairlines.com/itn/...ebspecials.asp My only issue is how long this airlines will keep flying. Better get the ticket on your credit card. |
AA's are back. When I checked this morning, the home page still said they're suspended, but if you ignore that and click, there they are. Some of them are quite attractive - I seem to recall a round trip from BWI to somewhere on the West Coast for under $200 (not $198 or $199, either).

Some non-web-only fares are better than usual web fares. I just booked a SEA-EVV round trip for a family member for $235 including taxes. The fare only required a 3 day advance purchase and has no minimum stay requirements.
