Plan this trip on the cheap
 

Friend plans to go YYZ-LAS-DFW-YYZ, stopping at each city for a few days.

He consulted Travelocity and Expedia, but they consider the itinienary (sp) as multiple one-way trips, which means "expensive" for him.
So all wise men here, any less expensive way to fly this trip?

One way is to buy 1 YYZ-DFW rt, and buy 1 DFW-LAS rt.

Fly on Thusrday, say, from YYZ-DFW (AA non-stop), then fly DFW-LAS using the first leg of the second ticket. Allow plenty of time for the connection, because you won't be able to check your bags through (if any).

On Monday, fly LAS-DFW, and spend some quality time checking out the cultural highlights of Dallas. (Never mind.) Thusrday, fly back to Toronto.

Hardly ulytra-cheap because fares from Canada to dallas are expensive, but at least it's less than US$700.

Break this into two itins: one an open jaw with YYZ-LAS outbound and DFW-YYZ inbound. I doubt any single carrier does both these nonstop (well, AC might) so you'll probably be changing planes somewhere on both legs (and if you fly AA your outbound might coincidentally be YYZ-DFW-LAS, although more likely YYZ-ORD-LAS).

Then for the LAS-Dallas leg fly LAS-DAL on Southwest. Because of the Wright amendment you have to buy two separate tickets, most likely for LAS-ABQ and ABQ-DAL. Upside is that WN doesn't hose you on one-way tickets (they cost half a roundtrip). You may be able to get one or both of these legs for a base fare of $30, depending on which markets WN is offering $30 fares between this week. Your friend must be willing to fly WN, of course, and s/he has to line up twice for boarding passes.

What are the dates of travel?

YYZ-LAS is a vacatio/convention route, so fares are likely to be less than YYZ-DFW, which is primarily a business one. I'd buy one ticket [AC, UA or AA depending upon FF program your friend belongs to] with Saturday overnight, 7-day advance. Then book, as suggested, a cheap SouthWest to DAL. Make the return trip from DAL so it arrives a couple of hours prior to the AC [UA/AA] departure from LAS back to YYZ. Of course, if this has to be done next week, your friend is out of luck and should book this trip with points.

Nice idea but it doesn't work as Frequent Freak already pointed out. The infamous Wright Amendment is still in effect which means that no scheduled service using a/c with more than 56 seats can serve DAL to anything further than an adjacent state without buying a seperate ticket for beyond flights.

The person would have to buy a ticket from LAS to an airport in a state adjacent to Texas and then buy a seperate ticket from there to DAL.

Try finding LAS-DFW on National Airlines, America West, American or Delta.

Regarding the LAS-DAL two-ticket idea, it looks like you have several possible connecting cities at your disposal. MAF and LBB seem to be the cheapest, about $10 less than going though ABQ, ELP, OKC or AUS.

Apparently there is no roundtrip purchase requirement.

For LAS-DFW, Sun Country is $104.75 one way. Round trip is $209 on Sun Country, AA, HP and National (advance purchase with Saturday night stay).

Southwest from a non-Wright state to Love Field makes sense only if you are not staying over Saturday night but the "legal" cheap fares require that, or if you are flying last minute. LAS is cheap, cheap, cheap, so Southwest between LAS and DAL almost never works out.
