Buenos Aires safety at present time?
With the economic problems in Argentina, any opinions about how safe it would be to travel to Buenos Aires now? Any impressions would be appreciated.

i would not hesitate to go to ba. however i'm going to cordoba 8/1 & not going thru ba. much better route [for me ] is dfw-scl[non stop [everyone erase direct from memory] scl- cor nonstop on lanchile ow partner also 20/20] used to lv dfw at 1730 or so arrive cor 1400 if lucky. this lvs dfw 2100 arr cor 1130. there have been lots of posts re ba taxi's hotels etc. search for info. just wanted to post alternative rt-if not just going to ba. i have never had a problem in ba [ have made 20+ trips passing thru ba going to viedma, cordoba, san martin, baraloche, & others. only problems were that aerolineas flts always changed before i got there.

I consider travel to Buenos Aires to be as safe as travel to London, Paris or New York. Of course there are areas you should avoid, but you should not categorize BA as being similar in safety concern to other South American cities like Sao Paulo or Rio - which are considerably more dangerous. A good guide book will detail the areas you should avoid.
The current economic problems in Argentina, though flared up, are nothing new - especially to the people who live there. In other words, with little current world economic news, the financial world has again focused on Argentina, but the same problems were there six months and three years ago. I was there six weeks ago with my five-year-old son. We do not speak Spanish, and we were very comfortable negotiating the city and walking the streets. We even went to a soccer match, although I did arrange tickets and transportation through a hotel as the areas around soccer stadiums can be a little rough. I hope you enjoy your trip. |
I made my first visit there a month ago after a 6 year absence. It's still generally safe but 1) I did notice beggars which I didn't notice in 1995 & 1991, and 2) I was the victim (unsuccessful on the perpetrators' part) of a variant of the mustard squirt tactic used in Europe.

Buenos Aires is still very safe. Use common sense and you will be fine. Enjoy your trip.

Got back from BA two weeks ago. Didn't fear it at all. Felt real safe, stayed at Hilton in Puerto Madero. Real nice area. Just stick with 'Radio Taxi's...
