Maximum FF credit card?

I don't fly much; however do purchase in excess of my 100K limit on business. Are there credit cards available with unlimited miles available without flying/elite status?

Check out Diners and/or AmEx. Both allow you to accrue unlimited miles and then transfer them to airlines as needed. Diners allows transfers to a lot more airlines, but AmEx is accepted at 3 times as many places.

Alternately, you can just get multiple CC's.

AA/CitiBank has a yearly limit for miles
accrued from purchases - I think it's 60,000. You're better of with a card that lets you choose your airlines.

If you're willing to commit to Delta, the Delta Platinum SkyMiles card is the way to go. After signing up for a Delta SkyMiles frequent flyer account, apply for the Platinum card.

Right off the bat you'll get 15,000 miles. For each Delta ticket, most gas, supermarket and drugstore charges will net you 2 miles for each dollar. If you charge more than $25,000 annually, you will get a bonus of 10,000 miles which count towards elite qualification. After $100,000, I believe you are limited to 1 mile per dollar. On your anniversary date they will give you a free companion ticket certificate for travel in the U.S., although some have said that it is of limited value.

Each Amex mileage posting counts as activity in your Delta account so, if you never fly on a paid Delta ticket, your miles won't expire as long as you keep charging.

You don't say what you have now, nor what your preferred airline would be. The higher level citibank cards allow up to 100,000. That in conjunction with Diners Club - which has a 12,000 mile bonus and a bonus for the sponsor code - which could too, or AMEX starpoints, would give you plenty of credit to have all you miles count.

Citibank also offers a Business MasterCard with 7500 bonus miles to sign up and, I think, 100M or 150M miles cap.

CIBC Aeroplan Visa card has no limit and typically a 5,000 mile sign up bonus. Can only be redeemed for Air Canada miles = Flights on * Alliance.

Better still you get 1 mile per Canadian Dollar spent.

I currently have the Chase CO Visa card and there is no limit (mileage cap) on the Platinum card. They recently upgraded my Platinum card to a "Signature card" and still there is no cap. I am happy with the CO card.

As to what card to get, it all depends on what airline you plan to fly. Also, Diners is good because you can transfer miles to any airline you want & there is no cap, but the downside is that it is not nearly as widely accepted as Visa/MC.

The Starwood AmEx is a terrific card. It's my understanding that the previous cap was recently lifted. You earn 1 Starpoint per $ charged, & Starpoints can be converted to airline miles in ~30 programs, nearly all @ a 1:1 ratio. If you transfer 20,000 Starpoints (to miles) @ once, they'll give you a 5,000 mile bonus. You can also choose to leave some Starpoints in the Starwood acct, & use them for award stays, etc. The Starwood AmEx card automatically gets you mid-tier frequent stay status, has no annual fee the 1st year (after the 1st year, it's ~$30), & has some nice hotel-related Starpoint bonuses available for the 1st year.

The overall flexibility & 5,000 mile bonus per 20,000 pt-->mile transfer make this card very, very appealing.

If you happen to have multiple FF accts, you can selectively transfer miles into the various accts from the Starwood acct--you aren't committed to one or even a few programs. And if you do happen to use the Starpoints for hotel stays, the Starwood program has no blackout dates or capacity controls on award stays--if there's a room available, you can have it (& on the spot--you could walk right in, whether for an impromptu or planned stop, & get a room using Starpoints to "pay" for it, & that's that).

I can't say enough about that card... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Alot of folks have recommended the Starwood card. Is there a website for signup?

Is it possible to have more than one Amex at a time, as it is with Visa/MC etc?

I signed up for the Delta Amex last year with a no-fee first year + bonus miles... I figure I'll get rid of it before they start charging, since I accumulate primarily UA miles...

gleff, at one point I had 3 AmEx cards, with no problem from them. I had a Gold card w/MR, Starwood & Delta Platinum. I've since cancelled the Gold card.

A friend also had 3, but when he applied for a 4th he got a letter 'suggesting' he cancel one of the other cards before they would approve. I'm not sure of his credit worthiness....

In addition to Starwood, may cards remove earning limits when yousign up for auto-debit. So you get unlimited miles and you have to remember to pay one less bill.

dgordon Jul 10, 2001 10:08 pm

gleff - if you are planning to discontinue the Delta card, you could call AMEX and ask to "change product" and your Delta card would be converted to a Sheraton (now called Preferred Guest Card I think) - it avoids another check on your credit which could be a problem if you have too many requests for credit (so I hear). I had 2 Delta cards - I changed one to Sheraton, and one to Honors - I got the sign up bonus that comes with each of those cards.

Dgordon, are you sure it avoids the credit check? It's true you can switch and get the bonus--I did it from HHonors to DL last year when they offered a particularly good bonus. But I seem to recall it showing up on my credit report when I checked it a while back. I did not ask for a credit line increase when I did it. So, if it's important to someone not to have a credit check show up, then double check this info.

The AA citibank cards have no limit if you are gold/plat.
