Do you think we have till Aug. 15 or through Sept. 30 to make Priceline bids? Seems to me it depends what they mean by "offer".

MisterNice Aug 2, 2005 12:40 pm

I just spent all my hoarde of 4500 points on ebay. Nice, easy and quick. Direct 1 cent/point conversion. Not worth much time with the bad links to other programs.

Ack, I haven't done anything with my eBay points!

How many eBay points can be switched into AA miles or Asia miles?

RustyC Aug 6, 2005 11:41 am

Maybe what they could do in its place is a points-based rewards program for anything paid through an eBay credit card or through PayPal if funded from a bank account. In other words, try to move traffic through places where eBay gets a % of sales and doesn't have to pass it on to a third party.

Ebay sellers, for example, have no incentive to do checking-account debits to pay fees vs. putting them on a rewards card. Buyers also don't have a real incentive not to use credit cards on PayPal beyond the "Don't add to debt" bit.

Realistically, though, eBay is likely just to plod along in this area until and unless it has serious head-to-head competition. The "competition" now is indirect and inadequate, and eBay's fees and recent rounds of increases reflect that. Google might pose some challenge to PayPal, but it'll take a company with deep pockets and lots of programming talent to seriously challenge eBay. Microsoft would be nice.

Depends on what you think is the best value - there are at least 6 current offers - see my online shopping comparison table (alphabetically under E).

Microsoft?

oooh... NO!

Then there'd be bugs galore!
I could see it now:

Your camera you just bought is diverted to India and you have to wait on hold with some IT tech for 3 days to get a "it must be your computer, sir" type of response. Try rebooting and the camera will ship to you in 5-7 business days.

NOT!

I just went to www.ebay.com/travel and I see NO way for me to bid on priceline. There used to be a little space at the bottom of the page.

I see a flash box (using IE) that will allow me to put in my info, but when it takes me to Priceline it doesn't ask for my eBay user name like it used to.

Since the writing is most definitely on the wall I suggest you switch to one of the other portals / points / cashback programs offering rewards for Priceline. See http://www.andrewcram.com/frequentflyer_bookings.html

There is a thread in Travel Bidding that discusses how to do this.

Strangely enough an unsuccessful bid placed directly from priceline led to a screen with "back to ebay travel" link. I clicked on it and was able to rebid after entering my username (just like in good ol' times). Maybe this is some sort of cache artifact. I use Firefox btw.

They're all far from 950 Anything Points or 750 MyPoints :(
Well, I guess they were too good offers to last forever...

I have several outstanding points from mid-July that haven't posted, so I'm not sure whether lack of points posting is any indication either way. :(

There are several threads in regards to this program. Here is a link to one of the original threads, with a posting I placed about how I'm getting some resolution. Feel free to take a look, and hopefully you all have been able to get your points earning squared away, as the earning capability ended for the most part on July 18.

I did manage to earn points for two PL reservations made on July 22, a few days after the announcement by ebay of discontinuation of the program.

For those wondering what MBNA card to switch to - MBNA says all eBay cards will become worldpoints - not worth anything IMO.

I will try to merge my eBay card with my Merrill card. For those that do not know, 50K spent will get you 50K Merrill points AND 4 Ritz nights. The Merrill points can be used for flights directly - 25K points for up to a $500 flight - domestic or international. OR you can convert your points to BA miles 1:1 with no converstion fee. The Merrill card has no annual fee and seems to be the best MBNA offering for the time being.

holtju2 Apr 11, 2007 12:20 pm

Just redeemed 100K Asiamiles that I got through this for GRU-MAD-TXL on IB in C for a friend of mine.

RIP eBay Anything Points. We sure miss you. :D
