Goldlust, if you don't see the humor above, you're probably not able to enjoy the humor in the New List thread.
Let me refrase what wrote above from "being considered" to "being processed" if that make critics any happier. I'll edit my post to reflect that. Done.

Although it seems pointless and needless to say: I have written several times that due to my limited knowledge of FT, Empress (a real old-timer) does the actual approving. I have sent invites to people that I know and/or trust but so can anyone who is on the list. Personal criticism of my person does not reflect on any decisions made by Empress (to my knowledge).

Another advantage of the list is that notification is instant and does not rely on people checking FlyerTalk often so there are in fact several reasons for the list. It is a valid point that the airlines may not monitor the boards at all (We know for a fact that they do, though) but then make that point and do not blur it out by making fun of me trying to do something good for everyone.

Jim67094: There are always people who do not appreciate other peoples work and have nothing but criticism and mean sarcasm to offer. I accept this as a fact of life, on The Net and elsewhere.

Myself and Empress are putting in hours of time and work on this list and most people like the idea. Though I try to ignore the cruel criticism also have feelings and I cannot see any possible justification for some of the critical posts.

Ok Here's my mail

Punki May 27, 2001 11:55 am

Well I personally requested to be on Goldlust's List and have posted on the new list. I saw no dichotomy whatsoever therein.

After having the privilege of spending a fair amount of time with Goldlustand discovering what a clever and interesting young man he is, I very much want to be part of any venture he proposes as I suspect that they too will be as clever and interesting as he. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cool.gif

I interpreted the new list as a refreshing opportunity for all of us to laugh at our admittedly somewhat distorted obsessions. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

The real reason most of us like to hang out together is because we are the only people we know who don't think all this miles and points stuff is a little whacky. Funny though how those same people who are sure we are crazy, never turn down free tickets. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

trapeze May 27, 2001 12:27 pm

Please add me to the list. You now hae my mail.. Thanks.

Ditto for me, on both counts.

I would appreciate being added to the list. Thanks.

I would like to be on the list also. It would really help me.

Seriously, set the group up at yahoogroups.com, and you don't have to do anything but approve the members. They can sign up with an address direct to yahoo groups, and you can maintain the list there. People send an e-mail to whatever address they come up with, you just go through and check approve for everybody you want on the list. This way you don't get any of it in your mailbox. If you are trying to do this manually, you will be overwhelmed (as you are now). Use one of the online services, like yahoogroups, to do most of the work for you. I use them for three lists, and with the exception of postings from hotmail being delayed for no reason from time to time, never had a problem with it. Best of all, it's free.

Flyertalk info is instantly available, though, except for those times when there are duplicates and you can tell the system has been acting up. I've had mail from many people delayed up to 2 days when various ISPs screw up.

Some people may like to be kept informed by email, others by reading online, others may just want occasional summaries. Nobody wants to be at the mercy of some home-concocted system. If you are serious about this, please do as cordelli suggested and just make it a yahoogroups or similar group, where everything's automated for you and you just approve things.

The reasons for setting the group up by private means are stated in my original post at the Hilton board.

(I have some lists at Yahoo Groups though)

Furthermore a list of this nature that requires intro-mails from all applications would hardly be easier at Yahoo Groups:
I would get an intro-mail from them anyway, and then I would have to log on to Yahoo and find them on the apply list and approve there .

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I didn't see the original post there.

However, I am on some private lists, and every time the person running it changes ISPs, there's a high risk of list disruption. Every time someone wants to change their email address, they have to send email to the correct address. (How many times have you seen "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" messages sent to actual lists, rather than the list maintainer?)

If someone's email stops working, they can still read their yahoo groups messages. If someone's email is running slowly, they can read their yahoo groups messages sooner than their email. Members in yahoogroups can reply to lists (assuming you are allowing any form of replies to the list, which you may not be??) from different email accounts, whereas most lists will only accept email from the recipient's registered email address.

Most importantly, if something happens to you, you can easily put other people into a moderating capacity on yahoo groups. That tends to be much harder on something you've set up yourself. (I speak as someone who "inherited" control of a yahoo group I'm in due to the original creator not having time to manage the group.)

Despite how yahoo have managed to mangle a few things since egroups ran it, there seem to be many advantages.

I'm sure it helped keeping the list short that you submitted your post 11 times http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

worldbanker May 31, 2001 7:53 am

Count me in on the list. I wish FT was not open for public viewing as there are too many lurkers.

The idea of FT anyway is for the audience to be frequent flyers who wish to maximize their mileage accounts, not for lurkers. Let's not spoil a good thing. Until then, the list will keep those who can best use the information among those we can hopefully trust.

If FT were not for public viewing, you would not have been able to find it yourself, unless you were one of the founders.

worldbanker May 31, 2001 12:15 pm

Then I guess we are the founding forefathers. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Seriously, FT has grown to a good size. I think only those who register should have access. Access would still be free but not completely open. Other websites make you register. We should know who is visiting FT plus it would also help us overall with statistics- ie. we could say FT has 6 million UA mileage plus members or 240000 Hyatt Gold Passport members.

Thanks,

Why is it that quite a lot of folks who want on "the list" are either very new to FT and/or have a hotmail style email/no email?

I'm sure that if I were the webmaster of an airline site I would get my a** on the list before it gets kicked due to some pricing type...
