The way they are placing new hires now, I should be making six figures a year within three years of getting hired. I just took the test, btw, and it wasn't too bad. My "two year degree" after a BS and flight experience turned out to be 18.5 credits. Honestly, if I was 18 and wanted to chase money, I'd find a two-year school (community college) that offers an ATC curriculum, graduate within 2 years, get on the FAA hiring list, and find other alternatives to finish off a four year degree. The hiring process is a royal PITA, so you need to have something to do while waiting for the FAA "to call." By doing a two-year degree first, hopefully you'll have a training slot close to the end of finishing off your four year degree. If you pursue the four year option from the get go, you have to wait until you graduate *and then* get on the hiring list. Then you have to waste time and try to avoid paying off your student loans until then. :)MM |

Thank you for putting the gift in the true, proper, perspective.. ^ |
ya know, I kinda had one backfire a bit... My compnay is small and the director is sort of "one of us" but with her new powers, she has had to travel a lot between two regions. I told her she should be getting miles and since she flies US Air a lot between BOS and Philly, they would add up over time. So she said, Set it up, and I did. In a very short time she had 35k or more. She was happy to hear that's one trip to the islands and then some...
Well, one day not too long ago when she was going over the numbers, she joked to me in front of my direct boss that I had been emailing her all about miles one day but should have been working on something more important. Huh!? I had sent one email outlining something about her account, a flight she was supposed to take and how many more it would earn her. My own boss didnt say anything at the time but later, when talking about something involving the numbers, she said, "well, you were spending time on people's mileage accounts and all that, so what did you expect the number to be for that month?" I kind of took it all as an insult to my intellegence! Firstly, I am 40 years old and know what priorities are, but if I am going to enable my director to fly free on her next vacation and it only takes one email to explain something to her along the way, then this sure shouldnt interfere with my job! It should be something I am told they are glad to have me around for! (Offline, others have come to me for advice on miles, etc, and I am happy to help, but my own direct boss does not fly enough to have ever cared to sign up for anything. When she went on 3 sep business trips though, she did not sign up and that's 3 flighst worth of miles she missed out on, so there!) Now they do not all know that I DO spend tons of time inbetween projects getting on this forum, but that dig was a wrongly timed one that makes me feel like I should not have bothered to help out with mile info for people I work with/for. One day, they too will stab you in the back whether they mean to or not. Now the director has around 60-65, thanks to me. I had her sign up for the credit card right before this went down. Gee, when she redeems them (if she can) do you think she will be glad to have saved money on two tickets to someplace nice for vaca? She sure likes islands and we get along because of talk of margaritas after work... have had a few with her and I bet the boss is just jealous, that's all. MM |
You should make a point to let your director know that you will keep information on bonuses etc to your self, because you see that no good deed goes unpunished.

and maybe I will just NOt tell her anymore... BUT I have to. it's my mile-minded way, you know! |
'fraid this qualifies as one of those "ughh I shouldn't have done it" posts.
A good friend stopped by SF en route from London to Sydney, having made the first leg of the trip in BA economy. He is very tall and had a horrid flight from LHR-SFO and was dreading the rest of the long trip. Since he was going to do some good works in Sydney, I offered to give him a UA MP award biz seat for the SFO-Sydney-SFO legs but was told that, on such short notice, he'd have to be wait-listed for biz. His discomfort was such on the LHR-SFO leg that he agreed to this risk and, in the end, the biz seat did not clear and he got stuck in Economy Plus for the 14-or-so hour flight to Sydney. He did get the biz seat coming back to SFO, but I never heard the end of it concerning the outbound Economy Plus seat and how uncomfortable it was. He had managed to get a refund on his forfeited BA tix, btw. And I still had Biz miles deducted. One last note: we actually had to go to the ticket agent at SFO together so the agent could be sure he had not acquired the miles illegally. Has this happened to any of you? |
I promised my parents free plane tickets for their 40th anniversary. They had been talking about Hawaii for years, so I mentally budgeted two tix for them. I'm actually spending a lot of time in SF now, and I figured that they could even stop and see me on the way. :)
Well, Hawaii turned into Europe. I could only get some segments on awards and spent hours and hours and hours in the last six months trying to improve the award and the routing. And somehow I mentioned business class, which may come to pass and which may not. So somehow I've gone from a gift of 70K miles to perhaps 180K miles. I don't think they know how hard it is to earn miles, but they absolutely know how much time and effort I've put in on their behalf, and they are very very grateful and appreciative. For my part, I feel very lucky to have such wonderful parents. I am enjoying thinking about their trip. I spend lots of time imagining their faces when they explore a country they've never been to. And if they end up in biz class it will make me even happier, because that would be a huge rare treat for them. So with apologies to MasterCard for being sort of sappy, here's how I think of it: Number of AA miles leaving my account: currently 120K, maybe 180K Value of time spent trying to get the optimal award tix: too much to count Thinking about parents' trip that I helped make possible: priceless |
KS, I hope you get tickets that work out for your parents and it sound like you won't regret it. I feel that my aunt and uncle will fall in the same category. They know my offer is coach to Hawaii and that they can make one stop-over, probably to San Francisco to see one daughter - but it could be Chicago, to see me!!! Anyway, there won't be any switching to a different location as the offer was based on them talking about going to Hawaii for several years now. And they use award tickets to see their daughters in California, one in San Diego and one in San Francisco. From me they learned that the award ticket could cover the trip between the two cities. Before I informed them and helped them do this several years ago, they were paying for the flight between the two cities. So they are greatful and know how hard it is to collect miles and get an award ticket.
I look forward to hearing your happy report. |
