I know this is somewhat oblique, but I can't help myself from sharing this.., last year a colleague of mine booked his family on a LHR-ORD flight for their holidays.

He thought ORD was Orlando!

Even the airline people get it wrong sometimes -- when a CSR was trying to find my record yesterday, she asked if I had flown from Los Angeles to Kansas City. I told her I hadn't, which confused things a little more until I told her we were coming from Orlando... It took me a few minutes to realize why she would confuse the two (MCO vs MCI)

ORD = Orchard, the original name of the airport, before it was renamed for WW2 hero Butch O'Hare

CVG = Covington, the town in Kentucky in which CVG actually sits

MCI = similar to CVG: the airport is actually in Missouri City. and not so ironic about Sprint, since MCI and Sprint are one company now.

Hmm, ABC is Peking? Thought Beijing (aka Peking) is PEK.

Seems that a lot of the confusion stems from codes coming form the name of the airport, instead of the name of the city. E.g., SVO is Shermetyevo, to distinguish it from Domodyevo, Moscow's other airport. And IAH of course is Intercontinental Airport Houston.

Pynchonesque: Missouri City is in Clay County, not Platte County where the Kansas City International Airport is located (referred to locally as KCI). The initials MCI stand for Mid-Continent International. The original airport downtown is MKC: Muncipal Kansas City airport, used now for general aviation. Also, I believe the SPRINT and MCI telecom deal is off.

Correct about SVO (Sheremetevo, to the Northwest of town) and DME (Domodedevo, to the Southeast of town). Moscow has two other airports as well: Vnukovo (VKO) and what I believe is the now-mothballed Bykovo.

IAH was recently renamed "Bush Intercontinental Airport," after the former President, but nobody here calls it that, except the TV news anchors. We just call it "the big airport" as opposed to HOU (William P. Hobby Airport, named after a former Texas governor, and now undergoing massive renovation).

ABC is actually Albacete in Spain.

I think Orlando (MCO) used to be McCoy Air Force Base.
