More TWA / AA Merger (for newbee, help)
 

Please forgive me if this has been asked a million times,(I'm a newbee) but this is my problem:
HELP HELP HELP HELP!!!
Have about 23,000 miles in an AMEX miles account. We are going to be cancelling our AMEX card and exclusively use our new
AA Advantage card. Can we transfer our AMEX miles into TWA and THEN will AA take over those miles? We will have to open a TWA Aviator account? When do we have to do this? I read somewhere AA will be taking over TWA miles on July 3rd. We certainly do not want to lose these miles. We almost use AA exclusively because we travel to Caribben 2x a year. (Other ideas welcome too!) THANKS!

There is now new information at both aa.com and twa.com on the merger of the frequent flier programs. But yes, you should move all of your MR points into TWA within the next two months, and then come the end of November they will move these automatically into American. The only thing that they haven't said (which may not affect you) is whether these points will count towards their million miler program. If you are sure that you are canceling your MR account, then I would do this sooner than later. FF

I know I thought about this for a long time.

After much consideration and reading in this bulleting board, I transfered a substantial amount of points from AMEX MR to TWA.

From what I have read it seems like the risk is minimal [or non-existant]. However, I was [and still are] a little concerned.

Not to split hairs, but I don't think AA will be "taking over" the Aviators accounts on July 3rd. However, Amex has said it will end its relationship with Aviators at that time.

So, yes, you will have to open an Aviators account if you don't have one (you can probably do that online), then tranfer your Amex points by July 3.

Eventually, AA will absorb Aviators. You'll just have to let your newly-tranferred points sit until they do.

I just looked at TWA site and as of May 1 they no longer are giving new member TWA accounts. Does any one have another idea how to transfer MR points into AA?

I guess AMEX is still mad at AA for not taking them as a partner oh wait it is the other way around...isn't it?

Hi everyone. I posted the original question and I now have some information. I called AA and they said they will definately take over the Aviator's miles approximately at the end of the year. But to deposit them into the TWA account now.
Yesterday, I called TWA Aviators Club and was fearful that it was too late to open an account. I WAS able to OPEN an account and now have my Aviators account number.
Today I am going to transfer my 26,000 AMEX miles into it. After speaking to both TWA and AA I feel secure that this will be accomplished. The only down side is that if you need your miles on AA before they take over TWA, I am not sure if you can use it before the end of the year.
Another thing they told me, if you currently an an AA Advantage account, the names on that account and the new TWA account must match EXACTLY. If anyone is doing the same thing, please call airline clubs first.

Names MUST match exactly. You can check on either airlines site what they think your name is. On TWA you can change it on AA you have to send them all kinds of documentation so I would just change your TWA account.

According to the AA EXP desk miles will move by year end and will count for Million or Multi Million mile status. They will NOT count for EXP qualification.

After a hair pulling time calling Amex to link my TWA number to my AMEX MR account (you are an "unperson" to CSRs if you don't have a social security number, but that's another story)....
