ask your airline where they are in preventing chaos. this is today's press statement of UA:

"WHAT: United has determined that 40,000 computer programs used by the airline need to be checked, and about 11,000 of these must have changes made in them. The programs handle critical functions such as payroll, revenue accounting, flight planning, aircraft scheduling, maintenance planning, parts inventory management, seat inventory management, marketing programs such as Mileage Plus, and the customer reservations system. In addition, the project team is investigating all company equipment which may use dates, including avionics equipment, telephone and other communications equipment, flight simulators, baggage systems, airport ground equipment, building management equipment, and access control systems.

WHERE: The bulk of United's computer operation is located at its World Headquarters in Chicago, however, the project team is studying computer systems at all of the airline's locations worldwide.

WHEN: To date, United has completed about 70 percent of its Year 2000 work on its critical core computer systems. This initial modification phase will be complete by Dec. 31, 1998. United is on schedule to complete company-wide integrated testing of these mainframe applications by March 31, 1999. The remaining nine months of 1999 will be spent on additional testing of the most critical equipment and computer programs."
