"Challenge" program

Do airlines other than American Airlines offer the Status Challenge program, whereby you have 90 days to complete 5,000 miles for instant elite status?

I think Delta now has the starts of a challenge program for people who try to request a status comp...of course no LUT (cheapie) fares count.

For clarification, AA's status challenge is based on points, not miles. The more discounted fares earn 0.5 points/mile.

Also for clarification, HP (America West) has a similar challenge available.

AirTran has a similar program, Elite status is normally gained through earning 50 credits in one year. But if you earn 20 within 90 days you can also get Elite status.

(A one-way trip is is one point in coach, buisness class is 1.5 each way)

There are several active threads in the America West forum, generally having "Silver Challenge" in the title, or something similar. Basically, it allows the person in the challenge to achieve their elite status in an abbreviated fashion (I believe it's 6000 miles for Silver in 90 days).

I'm 500 miles short of gold on AA challenge. Generally is it worth it to book a cheap flight to reach gold status?

Depends how much more traveling you are planning. If you are going to enjoy your Gold status for only one short trip, it might not be worth it
