I have no problem with Orbitz as long as the other booking systems have the same access to the airline's cheaper fares. Orbitz is not a CRS system so is not subject to the same rules and regulations that would require this. All signs currently point that the cheapest fares will only be avaialble on Orbitz or the airlines own web sites. I do not call this fair competition and ceratainly not something that should be allowed to go forward.

I must say I agree that merging is a fact of business, no matter how unpalatable (like the airline mergers trying to be approved right now), so when a new variable enters the equation, it is interesting to see how the market reacts. Check out this press release-it was backed by Orbitz though:

Airline Industry Study Defends Orbitz Project: http://www.newsbytes.com/news/01/163165.html

Orbitz - the airline industry's embattled Internet-ticketing project - will strengthen rather than stifle competition in the travel industry, according to a new report commissioned by Orbitz.

"New entrants in travel distribution are being met with substantial opposition from the old guard and from leaders in the online travel marketplace," the report says. "More specifically, the agency community is opposing consumer-direct distribution by travel suppliers, and in particular, attempts to aggregate multiple suppliers onto a single site."

Published by Global Aviation Associates, the report accuses the travel-booking industry of mounting a concerted and well-funded lobbying push against Orbitz, in order to protect its profit margins.

Because this study was commissioned by Orbitz, I give it the same weight as United/American saying their pending buyouts of US/TWA will improve customer service. Whenever a company commissions a study, why does the study always support the side of the company that paid for it???

It is also interesting to note that the main complaint raised is the large cost the airlines have to pay to the travel booking industry (CRS systems). The last time I checked, most of the CRS systems were owned by the airlines. Sabre was recently spun off by American for a tidy profit. This is like Pizza Hut complaining about the cost of buying pepsi for its resturants when the Pepsi company owns Pizza Hut.

(Pepsi did sell off its resturant business to Tricon a few years ago).
