Well you can still move miles to Midwest or Continental (at least for now), so you don't HAVE to keep them on Amtrak. Of course the main reason I got involved was to move miles OUT of Continental NonePass so I could actually USE them. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.

What a kick in the pants. I had directed a good portion of my Christmas shopping and recent hotel stays to CO miles in hopes to get rid of my OnePass miles, and now the transfer to United disappears. Gah!!! Well, anyone have thoughts as to whether the transfer to HiltonHHonors is worth it?

Opinions appreciated.

Well points wise redeeming in Amtrak is the greatest value, I get 2-3c a point easily.

I think you mean VAC. Amtrak doesn't serve YVR.

Actually, the Coast Starlate only goesas faras Seattle-King Street. Fromthere you will have to take a bus to Vancouver-Pacific Central or R.O.N. and catch the morning Cascades train.

Oh ok. It looked as thought YVR was served by AMtrak. Maybe I was just up too late. ;)

I think our friend, Reindeerflame was having some fun with you. VAC is the Amtrak code for Vancouver, BC. YVR is the airport code.

ByrdluvsAWACO Dec 31, 2004 2:53 pm

Oh that tricky Reideerflame. Vancouver will always be YVR to me regarless of what Amtrak says. :p

Just tried converting, and didn't see the UA option. Tried calling their number at 1-800-307-5000, and they're closed for the holiday (with no indication of when they did close or will be opening again.)

So then I come here and find this thread. Pretty lame that they gave no notice whatsoever. I'm one of the folks who signed up to make my CO miles usable at UA.

I guess one lesson is to not wait until the last minute to make a redemption request. I bet they were getting lots of requests right before year's end, and that prompted the immediate change.

RustyC Dec 31, 2004 4:51 pm

Durn. Guess it could have been worse if they did it in January and more people had moved points over from CO but not yet into UA. In past years I've tried to do that as quickly as possible.

I wonder why the change. Is it really in UA's interest at this point to be ending partnerships or trying to demand better terms? Or did Amtrak want to pull the plug?

I don't think we'll ever know. United could be trying to reduce liabilities, or one party didn't like the terms of the deal.

My guess is that Amtrak pulled the plug. The net flow appeared to be toward United, so UAL was selling miles (a good thing in this financial environment). The other airlines --> Amtrak --> UAL was probably a wash for Amtrak, but the Amtrak --> United (i.e., rear end in train points) was a cash loss for Amtrak.

Enough of the personal stuff

After a temporary time-out for this thread, and some moderator actions, let's get this back 100% on topic. Any additional off-topic or trolling commentary will result in a second locking of the thread, and no possibility of parole.
