1. 37K only applies to Canadian based AAdvantage members
2. 25K and 40K upgrade applies to full fare Y and C tickets, I don't believe award tickets counts as full fare anything.

Thanks very much for all your comments. A couple of things. One, it looks like you can fly Cathay NYC-HKG-SYD in economy for 55,000 AA miles (award code CX55F00), although I would need to rely on my AA platinum status to be upgraded to J (by no means guaranteed). Also I don't want to stopover in HKG so that is a lot of travelling. It doesn't look like Qantas have any similar specials right now (does anybody know of any?) The alternative is to buy a QF or CX ticket for 700-800GBP and go through Asia, and do that for the Platinum Challenge. But again, upgrades and exit rows are far from assured and if you're 6'2" like me 20+ hours in Y is my personal vision of hell! I agree it would be cost-effective to earn challenge miles on the SYD trip, but wouldn't Platinum status, if gained in Feb or March 2001 expire in Feb 2002 anyway?

Thanks again for the comments.

Programs will vary, but I think if you qualify early year for high tier on UA for instance, they ordinarily allow that to hold good until end Feb 2003 as pointed out in first post above.

Okay, how about this...?

LHR-BKK/SIN-SYD on BA: 120000 miles for J
LHR-HKG-SYD on CX: 120000 miles for J
LHR-BKK-SYD on QF: 140000 miles for J

(All awards on AAdvantage)

Flying BA or CX seems to be definately the best option. It's only 15000 miles more than LAX-SYD on QF and it's a whole load less hassle (and saves you having to be on coach for many hours.

And many people will agree IMO that CX is on par, if not better, than QF! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Not to mention their "The Wing" lounge in HKG, which is (supposed to be, haven't been myself) simply amazing!

BTW, Compton Sid: It's just not worth even thinking about getting an upgrade on CX. They actually care about their premium products!

CX is way better than QF. I'd give QF 3 stars and CX 5 stars for premium cabins. After all Aussies live in semi-socialism while HKG is pure capitalism bar the Chinese take over. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
