with only 1 change of planes, the most flight miles on 1w would be aa to lax and then cx to hkg. even though jfk and yyz are in reality much farther because of their refueling stops, as cx gives miles by the crow and not the plane, lax endus up being less than 1000 miles closer to hkg than either of those two cities. plus you get the 1700 some odd miles for ord to lax as well. odds are you can have a late afternoon departure connecting to the overnight from lax, arriving in the morning just like jfk and yyz. for either of those flights you would probably need to leave a few hours earlier to make up for the extra 5 hrs flying time they represent.

Whenever I go to Hongkong, I always buy a oneway ticket to Bangkok (Surprisingly cheaper)with a Hongkong stopover and fly back from Bangkok either by China Airlines Business clas ($750 one way ) or Thai $ 950 one way.
The fares are from LAX Also explore on return CX-United club class RTW for 110000 Bahts (Around $ 2200 )

I just checked the cathay-usa site which has a special online offer $2690 one way to Hongkong and $ 1890 to BKK via HKG in BIZ class. Enjoy BKK as well

If you do the round-the-world option, remember to fly AA between LHR and NAmerica because BA flights don't collect AAdvantage miles over the Atlantic. [You'd miss out on 5K miles at least.] Since it is a daytime flight, you won't miss the sleeper seats in J-class, which you will likely experience if you fly HKG-LHR on BA. And transborder is correct to note there are pretty good route bonuses ex-YYZ on CX, as well as upgrading to F opportunities [though not sure about that on a r-t-w ticket]. Just be sure to register for them. (See details on the AA or CX web sites.)

CX-UA rtw tickets are much cheaper ($3618 in C?) than Oneworld or Star rtw tix.

Hello Moon Dog
Can you clarify whether the UA-CX RTW fare is $3618 canadian or 3618 US
Thanks

The best way I have gone from HNL --> HKG was via Submarine.. And, at an average speed of 17 knots, it only took a few days.

Hey I thought a little humor would help http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Since echoch started this thread, let me ask y'all another question.

If i want to go HKG from DFW, which is the best route? CX from LAX? Of course I want to stick with AA. Although it would be nice to have a nonstop DFW-HKG, but I don't think they have that route yet.

I think DFW-YVR-HKG (closest to the great circle route for AA-mileage purposes) will be slightly shorter at 8,145 miles than DFW-LAX-YVR (8,494). All depends on connection times of course.

DFW-YYZ-HKG would yield some 9,009 while DFW-JFK-HKG (via YVR) would yield 9,463.

if you really like AA that much, try dfw-nrt-hkg. but with the cx bonus mile offer, i belive u r better off in miles with the dfw-lax-hkg option...plus better quality on your longer leg (segment)

Thanks for the info guys.

I could swear I replied to this yesterday, but don't see my post. Anyway, the fare in question is in USD. I think you have to pay more if want to include the Southern Hemisphere in the mix.

I don't know which class you will be flying, but mind that many CX fare code not eligible for AA miles!!

I concur with the BKK option mentioned above. ORD-BKK via HKG is usually cheaper than ORD-HKG. Also, virtually all airlines offer extremely cheap seats in all fare classes from BKK back to the US (provided they are bought in BKK).

A first class hotel concierge in BKK can hook you up with a reputable travel agent to handle the logistics of the BKK-HKG-ORD purchase.

Follwing up question but for ECONOMY class.

1. Is the DTW-HKG-BKK-HKG-DTW (maybe via NRT as well) a good deal for economy class? Should this be done with a return ticket from USA or 2 oneway (but oneway in economy is usually very expensive)...

2. Normal stopovers is 1 month and one 1 stopover for discounted coach. are there any method I can stay in HKG for 2 months (real destination) or I can do tricky thing like 2 stops, 1 month each at HKG?

THANKS!!

HK-UMich,

DTW-HKG-BKK-HKG-DTW is nearly always cheaper than DTW-HKG-DTW. Don't know about doing stopovers in each direction, however. As a fall back, you could do the stopover in one direction and buy a seperate BKK-HKG-BKK roundtrip discounted economy ticket (extremely cheap, particularly if you fly Airlanka, Gulf Air, etc.)-- best done through a BKK travel agent, especially in BKK's Chinatown).
