Merchant Terminals

Has anyone ever thought about setting up as a merchant and running through your credit card to get miles as if they were purchases? I know most cards charge a fee, but will this still be worthwhile?

well, one of the cheaper merchant processing providers offers about 1.6% fees on Visa/MC. Plus the monthly (if any) fees and per charge fees. Don't forget the terminal or software you would have to buy...cheap and used is very possible. However, it still adds up to at least $160 per $10k.

Set up a paypal account and sell all your stuff to yourself (different ID's of course) on Ebay or something. Way easier, though at some point they will catch you and stop you.

There was a previous thread on this idea, http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=338769 .

Bottom line: It's illegal with most if not all credit card merchant companies.

It's not allowed by their agreements, but it's not illegal. You won't go to jail for it.
