That guy doeesn't know anything. I clipped this from the article.

The key here is to use your mileage to get a seat on the plane. Any seat. Why waste more than half the needed mileage for getting one seat just to get an upgrade on a seat you already have? You can’t seriously believe that free drink was worth wasting all the mileage."

To a CO elite, using milages to upgrade in domestic flights is definitely "wasteful". CO will upgrade their elites free (based on availability)
For international flights, I rather buy a ticket and use milages to upgrade. You can get a LAX - London ticket around $500.00 and burn 50,000 miles upgrade to CO BusinessFirst which normally costs $5,000. That's 50,000 miles for $4,500.00 rather than a free coach ticket (which is only $500.00).

This article was a waste, full of mis-information.

Maybe we should e-mail and tell 'em it was a waste!

Oh, if it was only true. My best guess is this nice fare is not upgradable with miles or whatever, at least it was not upgradable about a week ago. You had to get a $800-$1000 fare to get the upgradable fare class then.

He also infers that Star Alliance members can upgrade on each others flights, which is not generally true.

I've read a few of his columns, and as best I can tell the only reason he's the "TRAVEL EDITOR" is that Miss Manners and Police Blotter were already taken.

Maybe I'm a little odd, but I have never used miles for domestic upgrades and I never plan to. I also consider it wasteful. Although I fly up front 95% of the time now, even when I was flying mostly coach, I never thought this was a wise use of miles for domestic flights. Most of you that are disagreeing (based on your locales) probably are thinking international upgrades, which we all know is a much better use of miles. I think the author of the MSNBC article was thinking short haul upgrades.

I find mileage based upgrades quite useful especially on promotional offers for transcon travel. Done it for friends and family when I am not travelling with them. I do get enough free sticker upgrades that I have never used miles to upgrade domestically but I have not travelled in coach years either (mostly free or earned upgrades).
