We have Thailand and Cambodia booked for March. Interesting info above - amazing how many FT'ers have visited there!

Beware of Thai tourist agencies which will try to tell you the price of a visa is $125. It cost us $20 US in the airport. I think PP is worth going to though many tourists opt for Angkor only. We loved it! Stayed at the Sofitel on the river in PP. Is Rock Hard (as opposed to Hard Rock) Cafe still around??

Karen, yes I recall getting them at airport as well. The $20 was about the dearest expense we paid. No-one has mentioned, but food and drink are INCREDIBLY cheap when in Cambodia.

Cambodia has been discovered!:

Oscar-winning actress Angelina Jolie had an epiphany while wrapping up a week of filming at Cambodia's famous Angkor Wat temple complex.

doc, thanks for the above story link. Hopefully, Tomb Raider will lead to an increase in tourism, and thus result in an improvement in the economy in the area

If anyone goes, I highly recommend spending at least three days at Angkor Wat (just as I would recommend at least three days at Petra). The various temple complexes are huge and spread out and it takes time to really appreciate the architecture, the symmetry, the stone carvings... Also, it is very hot at all times of the year, so seeing Angkor at sunrise and sunset in the same day is difficult on the body. Then, of course, you will want to see the Bayon faces at dawn and dusk as well, take a trip to Bantreay Srei, see the huge trees overgrowing the temples at Ta Phrom, see the elephants at the city gates, etc... (apologies for what are likely misspellings of the major site names...just rambling off the top of my head and I didn't consult my guide books for proper names)

Just got back from a week in Cambodia flew into PP and then took fast boat up to Siem Reap, 2nd time in two years for this trip. Cambodia is an incredibe place to travel if you don't mind ruffing it abit. Thai, Bangkok Airways, Roayal Cambodian all fly from Bkk to PP. I flew Bangkok Airways from Bkk into PP and then flew from Siem Reap back to Bkk. Paid Us $222 for airfare. Have to do at least 3 days to see Angkok- even that is not enought time to really see everything.

Sorry for the late response. Been doin some quail huntin....

Thanks to everyone for the very thoughtful responses. I cant wait to make the trip. I'm taking everything under advisment - though the 'going out at night' part I think I can handle. Being born and raised in NYC has its advantages... Thanks again -
