how to get free miles

I'm a newbie not sure if I'm posting in the right place. I would like to know how to obtain free miles on United & Delta. I have checked both of their home pages, nothing...can anyone assist me?

Have you thought about calling up and asking for some? United seems to have a glut right now. Sometimes letter-writing campaigns help also.

Could you be more specific as to what type of free mile you are looking for?

Welcome to FlyerTalk wittione. A great place to start researching is the United forum on this site. That may give you some ideas. I would strongly urge you to do some research before posting a vague question like you did. It greatly helps if you show that you're willing to put some effort in.

There is no such thing as free miles.

However, check the airline websites for offers. For example, opening an account with Ameritrade earns United and Delta miles. You can also earn Delta miles by flying Northwest and others.

Check out the American Airlines thread on cheap miles. With some work you can get 20,000 AA miles for under $25! Spend another $40 and you cuuld get enough for a 25K award. Almost free.

(About 25K miles is the most though)
