DC at the end of the month...any itinerary ideas?
I'll be heading to DC at the end of the month for a conference. I get in on Wednesday and leave on a Sunday and will be staying at the Park Hyatt.
I've been to DC before, but I was in severe tourist mode...monuments dominated the day. I'm hoping that some of the residents or regulars to the area can give me a dining suggestion or two, as well as cocktail and 'must see' suggestions. I am not a sea-food fan, and gravitate towards steak. If you have any suggestions, please let 'em rip. Thanks...dingo. |
Mortons of Chicago, Capitol Grill for steak. For something a little, different, there is a place called Las Placitas (capital hill area). Its Salvadoran (most of us would think its Mexican). They have killer Margaritas, very friendly service, good food. There is a newer one in the Dupont Circle area.

Steaks in DC: A topic I know well. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
[*] Capitol Grill is good but the definative DC steakhouse is The Palm. A great porterhouse and phenominal people watching. [*] DC also has all the "chain" steak houses as well. Ruth's Chris, Morton's etc. For plane buffs, the Ruth's Chris in Crystal City (just across the Potomac River in Arlington, VA) has a wonderful view of DCA's runways with the DC skyline in the background. The kokonutz and the Catman and I enjoyed a great mini-FlyerTalk dinner there not too long ago http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif . [*] The Prime Rib is also a good choice for steaks - very clubby atmosphere. DC abounds with things to do. For drinks, hit the rooftop bar at The Washington Hotel. It overlooks the Clinton residence and the Mall. If you are lucky, you might see a federal agent carrying a dirty blue dress across the White House lawn http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/redface.gif . It is also just a short cab ride to The Palm. [*] The Adams Morgan neighborhood overflows with international cuisine and cafes. You name it, it's there in quantity and quality. [*] The Holocost Museaum is a must see in DC. It is open late on Thursdays. Call Ticketmaster in DC at 202-432-7328 in advance to get tickets. The museum is free but you still need to get a ticket for a particular time/date of entry. Of course, the fine folks at Ticketmaster will charge you about $5 for the "service" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif . Shoot me an email when you get to town and perhaps we can have a beer or two. There are several FlyerTalkers in the DC area. Cheers. -geo1004 [This message has been edited by geo1004 (edited 09-15-2000).] |
How could you leave the Occidental Grill off that steak list????? It's THE real DC steakhouse, dating back close to 100 years. They make a great veggie plate, too. And a block from the White House.
Not that the Palm is shabby.... |
Originally posted by joanek: How could you leave the Occidental Grill off that steak list? joanek, aren't you a vegetarian? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif I stand corrected. The Occidental Grill is another DC institution that serves some of the finest dead cow in the area. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif |
Best steak in DC for my money is Les Halle de Paris by treasury on Penn Ave.
Also a topic about what to do in DC came up not too long ago and there were several very good suggestions. A search will prove rewarding. [This message has been edited by Mvic (edited 09-15-2000).] |
Dear Geo1004,
Well. Um. I throw caution to the wind every so often and steal off the plate when no one is looking. (Don't tell.) And the Palm's creamed spinach is divine. |
geo1004, I hate to mention this... The Palm is a chain also. I've eaten at the Hollywood,Atlanta, and Charlotte locations. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And the old original in Manhattan! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
On 2nd Av - as is the Palm II http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif McDonalds = McDonalds Palm = Palm There are chains and there are chains- if you know what I mean! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif |

Tasty, ain't it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif And, doc, I agree. There are chains and there are chains. [This message has been edited by geo1004 (edited 09-15-2000).] |
Sam and Harry's for steaks. Kinkades for seafood.

The Holocaust museum is definitly a "must see", but take enough time since it's nothing to rush through. If you like money (who doesn't? ;-) ) the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, just next to the Holocaust muesum, is fun.

The Morrison-Clark Inn on L Street NW has a restaurant that has excellent food too, and it's not part of a chain.

geo1004, I'm a huge Morton's of Chicago VIP. However, I could slum at the palm when I'm there in a couple of weeks... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Red Sage for southwestern cuisine.
Drive out to the Shenandoah Mountains. Luray Caverns, etc. If you have a tank of money, eat at Inn at Little Washington!! National Aquarium in Baltimore - Maryland's road signs are more user friendly than Virginia's! |
