Welcome Back!

Sounds like a TV show. :)

Great job! ^

WestCoastFlyer Apr 1, 2004 10:06 am

It's great to be back

Thanks for all the hard work and the new site.

flipside Apr 1, 2004 10:06 am

I'm wondering if I should see if my moderador powers work, because this has nothing to do with miles or points! :D

doc Apr 1, 2004 10:52 am

Welcome back indeed! Thanks! :)

richarddd Apr 1, 2004 11:15 am

slow

Congratulations on getting the site working again.

The new site seems very slow, much slower than the old one. The old one was far and away the slowest board I've used.

Anyone else?

molasses induced dupe

MrAOK Apr 1, 2004 11:21 am

I am so glad you're back, but I need my fix to work faster!

Speed

The performance of the site for me seemed to decrease in the week or so preceeding the transition. I'm confident that it will ramp up in the bear future.

First reply, just a test.

SOOOOOOO SLOOOOOOWWWWW

Please enhance the boards performance!

Glad to have FlyerTalk back and running. The perfect cure for our withdrawal symptoms. Sadly, the excruciating slow speed of the website right now makes Chris Farley's time in the 100 meter dash look positively Olympic Gold Medal-esque.

Conversion issues

Hopefully whatever is required to get the site functional again won't cause that long a delay!

(Now let's see where this message goes when it posts...)

tofromord Apr 1, 2004 1:53 pm

This new Board is very sloooooooow.

Paul556 Apr 1, 2004 1:56 pm

Thank you -- so much! Great look.

siliconengineer Apr 1, 2004 3:23 pm

Yes, its been awhile, but surely not as long as what my welcome message says?

Welcome, siliconengineer.

Basically, the old forum software UBB did not store this information, so the new forum software vB has it set to the beginning of the UNIX epoch (one of the common methods used to store dates/times in computers). That usually comes up as Dec 31, 1969 or Jan 1, 1970.

If you're really curious, see these posts from the vBulletin site itself:

Yup, it reminds me of the woman from Texas.... spoke with such a slow drawl... that by the time she got around to saying she wasn't that kind of gal.... she was

dancingbear Apr 1, 2004 5:48 pm

No surprise that the board is slow

(Whoa! guided mode/enhanced mode.. i'm going to need to consult the manual!)

Just wanted to say that we should all be patient with the board's slow performance right now. Remember, FT has been closed for almost a week - that means a lot of FTers are logging in today to check out the new board. I bet they're getting five to ten times the number of accesses that they normally handle in a single day.

All that traffic is probably taking its toll. When the traffic volume gets back to normal, so will the board's performance. (I hope!)

CkCrunch Apr 1, 2004 7:17 pm

The more technical reason why its so slow

The forum is now dynamicly processed, and so everytime we load a page, it will have to be regenerated. Previously, the pages are not generated on the fly but rather each time something is changed, so the web server was simply serving static pages that is updated often.

So the forum will never be quite as fast as the old one, but then there's a lot of new features. (is there a way to turn off the topic review? its making the reply pages very slow to load...)

kid Apr 2, 2004 7:40 am

Slow yes, but great to be back up for sure. So while the new board hasn't been entirely completed, thanks so much for upgrading the FT site and for all the very hard work, Randy and the entire FT staff. ^

nologic Apr 5, 2004 12:38 pm

Are they making any progress on getting this thing to work faster?

It's still painfully slooooow, and it's been 4-5 days now... :o

bp888 Apr 6, 2004 5:25 am

Speed has improved!

It's much better now, 4:21am PDT. I'm sure they'll tweak it some more to increase the speed in the next few days/weeks. ^

mikeef Apr 9, 2004 7:50 am

This new FT is great! Speed is better than the old FT! Kudos to the team.
