United slashes fares to win back customers

CHICAGO (AP) -- United Airlines has reduced some fares substantially in an effort to win back business and shore up its image after a summer of labor strife, delays and cancellations.

The world's largest carrier said fares on many of domestic round-trip flights through December 14 will be reduced by about half, while long-distance U.S. and international flights will be cut less sharply.

Additional discounts will be given to people who book online at the airline's Web site, United said.

Reduced round-trip fares include Boston-Denver for $288, Chicago-New York for $198, Washington, D.C.-Orlando $198, New York-London for $228, Denver-Munich for $448 and Chicago-Frankfurt for $508.

Tickets must be purchased no later than September 22.

The move reflects United's desperation at the extent of this year's problems, said airline expert Joe Brancatelli, who writes a column for BizTravel.com.

"They must have such a gigantic shortfall in traffic, they had no other choice," he said.

They had a full page ad yesterday (wsj) on discounts both domestic, international (Transatlantic, transpacific and latin) destinations.

Always surprises me that Germany is generally TWICE the price of London from US hubs even on some sale pricings - this one bears that one oput. WEY? More carriers on the route?

its called virtual monopoly...in ua/lh's favor.

I am glad, that this Germany destination disadvantage is only when starting in N-America. Off-season-eco-fares from Switzerland (and Germany) on UA/LH are right now again very low.

rules: LH/UA only (includes code-shareswith each other), Saturday/Sunday night-rule, must be booked until end of sep-00, travel till dec-15-2000, prices from Switzerland between Sfr 499=$282 (Eastcoast) to Sfr 799=$451 plus tax ('W'-fares can be upgraded with LH miles&more if LH metal or with systemwide-1K-vouchers on UA).

Glad to hear that we in the U.S. are subsidising those cheap fares from Germany to the U.S. for you Rudi. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
