777 Seating

Need info on 777 seating. Is coach/bulkhead good? Any drawbacks? Also, what is Coach/exit row like. Am flying overseas with spouse and am interested in coach comfort levels... Thanx for any info.

You did not mention which airline. If it is United, you will not be able to book coach bulkhead ahead of time, even if 1P or 1K. They save it for families with babies on day of flight. When check in you may be able to get it though. If you can it is pretty nice, except for the middle aisle seats, the door to business class is right in front of them and you tend to get bumped into a lot.

My only experience lately with 777s is with british Airways. The seat configuration is 3-4-3. It seems like the leg room is rather cramped. I know that in the coach sections, pax tend to congregate around the bulkhead seats near the lavatories. I have often thought that these seats might be better to have in terms of leg room but I am not so sure. Enjoy your trip and welcome to Flyertalk!

If you are flying United, the best seats in the house are in row 30, A&B or H&J. They are the exit row seats. However, you have to be 1P or 1K on United to book them in advance. Lots of room, easy to walk near the seat and stretch, fun to talk to FA when they are facing you on take offs and landings. The middle section of row 30 is for babies and families. If you want peace and quiet, stay away from there.

BA has 22 777's in their fleet and only three of them have the 3-4-3 configuration (I believe these do the vacation package type destinations and at least one flies out of Tampa if I am not mistaken). The seat pitch in the 3-3-3 versions which do the Transatlantic leg is 32 inches which is pretty good for economy and an inch more than in the 747's.

On UA 1K's certainly can pre-book exit row seats ( I have done this over 100 times over the past 5 years ) and UA certainly doesn't allow anyone under 18 years old in an exit row seat. On a UA 777 either row 16 or 17 if a First Suite-equipped plane and row 30 are the exit rows. You can view seating maps on most airline's web sites, incl UA.

transpac - 1k's can not pre-book the bulkhead row on United 777's. Row 16 or 17 is bulkhead not exit. If you are able to pre-book them, consider yourself blessed as I have tried as a 1P and my co-worker who is a 1k has tried also, neither successful. I said nothing about exit rows which you can pre-book.

BA's 777s to Tampa have a high-density configuration with 3-4-3 in coach, and a small 4-row-2-3-2 Club World cabin.

Coworkers have told me that Club World is on par with the mainline Club product, Cradle Seat, service, and all.

Even so, I refuse to fly BA on this route. I am a big fan of the airline, but I'd rather connect than fly them to Tampa, even in biz. Why? I am unhappy with their substandard level of service on this route, and even though I make no difference to them I'm sure, I feel better spending my money elsewhere.

But, BA is too good IMO to let this boycott expand systemwide! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

With the exception of other Caribbean cities (San Juan), BA doesn't have this set-up on any other 777 service.

With all due respect, UA 1K's can pre-book whatever (coach) seat they choose; bulkhead, window, exit row, middle, wing, wheelwell, etc.

To verify this, I just pre-booked (and had confirmed) seat seat 31C (bulkhead) on a 777 IAD-AMS for an upcoming trip (but expect to be upgraded to C using a 1K Systemwide Upgrade.)

Edit: and yes, row 16/17 is a bulkhead not an exit row.)

Baze .. I am a United 1P and have pre-booked 8B on a 3 class 777-200 from SEA-DEN next trip. I think that is a bulkhead. It is a Business class seat, but still the same story.

The EXIT rows (30) I flew UA 777 in coach to Buenos Aires in Jan .. great room there and is my suggestion, and any 1P can pre-book as you said.

Exit rows in 777 are great for couples travelling together, as unlike with 747 which is 3 abreast, where you gotta hope the alleged "Premier zone" is kept for you (it never is on 747s!) the 777 is a dream run IMHO.

Transpac, yes agree for UA any seat, (except the captain's) you should be able to pre-book as a 1K! I have never heard there was a problem with bulkheads Baze, even for 1P, but may be yet another rule I've not yet been recited by UA!

Darn shame I never knew about systemwide upgrade certs in January!

Imagine SYD-SFO-Calgary-DEN-ORD-MIA-Buenos Aires all upgraded right thru with ONE little piece of paper! That's about 15,000 miles as I recall over 3 continents!

I must not be making myself clear. It is only row 16 or 17 (depending on configuration) that can not be pre-booked by anyone. I have tried, 1k's I know have tried. United has consistently said no to that bulkhead only. It is the bulkhead that basinets can be attached to so they will NOT pre-book it and save it for families with babies. You can get it at the gate if they know no babies are boarding. If you have been able to pre-book this row consider yourself very lucky. United has been pretty adament about it.
