Bumping from OVERSEAS destinations
Recent posts covered bumping on U.S. carriers on domestic flights. I am wondering about bumping from overseas airports, e.g. U.S. carriers from European/Asian/Latin American airports.
Years ago I was denied boarding on Varig from Rio to LAX. Did receive no compensation. "We do not do that in Brazil" I was told while handed over a hotel voucher at 1.a.m. A letter of complaint to Varig LAX netted in a promise for a 1-way upgrade on a future flight. Any experiences to share? |
UA once tried to offer me $300 to downgrade to coach on the HKG-LAX route on UA002 - a 16hour trip. Had it been $1,300 I might have considered it !

Last year on a severely discounted EWR-AMS NW flight booked in BF (US$500 round trip!), we were offered the option of a coach seat on the same flight with a 2,000 credit or a BF seat on a KLM flight leaving 3 hrs later with a 1,000 credit.

We're talking about when you have reconfirmed your international flight within 48 hours of the flight and still got bumped, right ??
In some countries, reconfirming your flight is a major task and not just a matter of contacting the airline on the telephone. And, you cannot assume that a codeshare flight means that you have been confirmed on the ongoing legs if you change airlines - even if your bags have been checked all the way through, right ?? |
Yes, confirmed and reconfirmed if necessary.
However, most transatlantic flights on most U.S. and European carriers do not require reconfirmation (XX hours before) anymore. |

A couple of unlucky friends of mine went with Gulf Air from LHR to Kathmandu. They did as was told an reconfirmed their flight home on arrival. Off the went up into the mountains for a two week adventure... then got back to Kathmandu to find the plane cancelled and no spare seats for a week = resulting in a week in the holiday inn and lost salary for the xtra holiday forced to take and a cat and dog going hungry at home !

I was in Kathmandu a few months ago. The time they had their first ever national maoist general strike.
Anyone who arrived that day needed to WALK from airport to city. Anyone who has been to dusty, hot KTM will really grimace at that thought! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif April 8th marked the largest national strike ever called in Nepal. Initiated by the Maoists (communists) they threatened violent armed response to anyone who used ANY vehicular transport anywhere in Nepal. Cars, buses, taxis, cyclos, tuk tuks, even bicycles were banned. They meant it, and the country basically stopped. Nine police were killed and dozens injured. My flight from LHR to ORD on American Airlines on Monday was oversold, and they were offering $1,000 vouchers for volunteers.

out of curiousity, where was AA asking for volunteers? At the gate (they usually don't assign gates until shortly before departure)? At the check-in counter? In the lounge? Here in the US, they normally make the announcement at the gate; however, at HNL they sometime start asking already at check-in. I've been on many full AA flights from LHR or MXP, but I've never heard any announcement requesting volunteers... |

They were asking at the "check in" of the gate. The way terminal 3 at LHR is set up is that the gates are big rooms left and right of a corridor, and you have to "check in" to get there (i.e. the process done prior to boarding in the US, is done prior to entering the gate area there). There was a big line of people waiting to "check in" to the gate, and an AA employee came several times asking for volunteers.
