IP logging turned on?

I just noticed that all posts now have a tag at the end that says: "IP: logged". Was that just turned on in light of recent um events on FT? Or has it always been on and I've just never noticed it?

FewMiles..

neo_781 Jul 12, 2000 6:56 pm

I noticed it too. It wasn't there a couple hours ago. Sometime around 7 pm central time it popped up.

belle3388 Jul 12, 2000 7:42 pm

what does that mean? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

Beckles Jul 12, 2000 7:53 pm

It means that everytime anyone posts something now the IP address you are posting from is logged.

Michael at WebFlyer Jul 12, 2000 9:02 pm

Please don't panic. Yes, I decided to turn the IP logging on in order to keep track of the...um, "situation". http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif No one but the staff here in house can see this information and your privacy is protected. You have my word. Sorry to have to do it but I felt the situation warranted it.

As soon as we have the situation in hand again we'll go back to the honor system. Sorry for the inconvenince.

Michael,

doesn't UBB offer something analogous to kill files on usenet? Seems to me that would be the best way to deal with the situation.

NYC1 Jul 12, 2000 9:49 pm

"Situation"?
What situation is that? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

belle3388 Jul 12, 2000 11:16 pm

dont mind at all, be my guest, log me anytime u want.... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Mvic Jul 12, 2000 11:45 pm

Happy to be logged if it means a return to civility. The recent "situation" is just not what we want on FT and it is good to see it being delt with. Good job Michael!

Axshully, _no._

UBB is a terrific piece of software, but there's no kill-file utility. Shame, yes. But that's the trade off for a GUI-groovy interface. <g>

...hey, if you can show me where to tweak it, I'd be darn grateful. UBB adminstration is tricky. :/

WHAT SITUATION.
I ONLY ONE DAY OLD AND DONT KNOW ABOUT THE SITUATION

Thanks for taking steps to keep this a useful forum.

Mizu Jul 13, 2000 4:00 am

A wise move - I'm OK with having my footprints recorded...

greg99 Jul 13, 2000 5:46 am

While I am typically a staunch civil libertarian, I think in this case, IP logging is probably the least restrictive means of achieving the "compelling" state, er, FT interest of keeping the forum free of obscenity.

IP logging is a winner in my book.

Thanks Michael,
Greg

Michael,

Thanks for taking this intermediate step. Hopefully that will deter some of the inappropriate postings that have occurred here. I do not find it intrusive...

Thanks

Hopefully this will allow FT to be FT once again. I don't care for BIG BROTHERism however in cases like this I'm glad its around and in use.THANKS!

even the professional troll is speechless!
may be it is time we put some trolling into good use? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Dorian Jul 13, 2000 9:31 am

FT should have an explicit and RAPID policy of banning usernames and IP addresses from users such as you know who.

Get rid of 'em! Why the floundering? Take ACTION! I personally am amazed nothing has been done! (even a little embarrassed for new users to see this!)

Michael at WebFlyer Jul 13, 2000 10:07 am

Good morning everybody. Hope all is well. Thank you all for your support. Looks like most of you agree with the tentative steps we've taken to rectify the last days troubles.

Dorian I think we are all pretty much in agreement here as to how to handle postings of the nature that we've seen on FT in the last day. We've tried the "RAPID" approach to expulsion from the garden of our community once or twice in the past and it was met with a great deal of hostility from the remainder of our community...I believe you may have been one who didn't agree with the decisions we've made in this fashion... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'm teasing you so please don't take me too seriously. We love you, and of course don't want to lose you, but please be patient with us and give us the support I feel that we might have earned. We want all of you to be as happy as we can possibly help you to be.

This appears to be a cut and dried situation but if you've been following it as closely as I have, and believe me I have, for the last 24 hours, you might agree that it's not quite so easy to make these sorts of judgements. Mr. Petersen and I talked at length yesterday afternoon and we have decided on a course of action that we hope will put things right. If not we'll take more drastic action until we have it under control...and yes, this includes banning the offending individual(s).

Again I'd like to thank all of you for your support and encouragement. Please be patient in this matter and we'll have everything back to normal in due course.

Yes, thank you so much, Michael. It is most definitely appreciated.

If I may offer a helpful suggestion, in order to avoid FT having to make mosre drastic actions, please get in touch with ---69's mother. Perhaps she can control him.

You can find her on the street in Las Vegas between New York, New York and the Mandalay Bay. Evenings only.

Dorian Jul 13, 2000 2:55 pm

Michael,

Thanx for the remedies to date.

What you are likely referring to is my disagreement with the complete destruction of a post in a thread (by a FT staffer)...leaving the thread with a hole.

My feeling is the expulsion of people who violate terms of service repeatedly in the way that has happened in the past day, should happen immediately. Things should never have dragged on so long. If Randy is away you should have authority to make this decision. Look what it did to things around here!

Dorian

p.s. just being honest and straightforward...as always http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

FlyAAway Jul 13, 2000 4:43 pm

You have my vote. Nothing is too drastic in this instance.

I do agree that the offender was given too much rope.

Once, shame on him. Twice, shame on you. Should have never gotten to 35 posts.

the scribbler Jul 13, 2000 4:51 pm

Could someone please explain, for my own edification--as I have no idea--what exactly the ramifications of "IP logging" are.

IOW, when "tracking" is refered to in an above post, does that mean you can tell which topics a user is going to on FT, just on FT, or everywhere outside FT?

I'm not concerned about it, just curious exactly what it is and more so how and when it goes on on other sites and I'm not aware.

Thanks.

opus17 Jul 13, 2000 5:37 pm

scribbler: Each computer on the internet has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address. That address is being recorded with each post.

In some cases, the addresses recorded might be the address of the user's "proxy server" (which I won't get into).

IP addresses are registered, so it may be possible to locate the posting computer.

dsimon Jul 13, 2000 5:58 pm

Thank you Michael, it is nice to know that we have someone looking out for us and with us http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

doc Jul 13, 2000 6:34 pm

And again, however, regarding IP addresses, and I did not want to post this "in the heat of battle" so to speak, it is actually quite simple to generate a new IP address or "anonymize" oneself each time you log on! Don't ask me any more please - I know nothing! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Dorian Jul 14, 2000 1:58 am

Just head to www.zeroknowledge.com if you don`t anyone to know who you are....not like some big secret with their current ad campaign!

YES, people know how to get through - it is another thing entirely to (A) remind them and (B) facilitate.

eMailman Jul 17, 2000 8:48 am

Actually the goal is not to deney access to a particular IP address or range of addresses. You just drop a note to the Admin with a sample of the offending material.

The Admin on that end will usually kill the account so that his whole user community will not be banished from the host.

Imagine the implications if one of the trolls has the same ISP as you do....
