Favorite Plane survey!

Hello All,

I am a recent ('99) college graduate, who, after a tour of "internal projects" at the company, is now on the road... my wife also works for the company, and she travels with me and we work Internet consulting gigs together... we are both UAL Premier, and we've only been traveling for about 4 months! (hey, I know it's not THAT impressive compared to some people on here, but hey, I'm only 23... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I was wondering what the general consensus was on FT's favorite planes? I know everybody must have a personal favorite or two, so I (and I'm sure everyone else) would be interested to hear what specific planes people like and why.

My personal favorite (wife's too) is the Boeing 777... it has been my experience with smaller planes like Airbus 319/320s and Boeing 727/737 that the cabin pressurizes at a much quick and MUCH more comfortable rate the the 747... the 747 seems a bit 'drafty' and doesn't seem to be as comfortable pressure-wise. Also, on some models (at least on UAL), you get a video screen in the seat back in front of you... these are usually fed by about 4 different movies and 2 or 3 special interest channels. Does anyone else know if any other plane model offers this 'seat back video' option and on what airlines? I was under the impression that it was a 777 only thing, but I'm probably mistaken.

Also, it seems (IMHO) that they staff the 777 with the same (or very closely the same) number of FAs as the 747, but since there are less people, the service is better... that could also be a factor of better attendants getting to work on bigger planes, but I'd need confirmation from someone else here for that. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Up until I flew the 'seat back video' 777, the coolest thing I'd seen was the little flip-down video screen on the Airbus cabin celings, but when I experienced the 777... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif

Anyway, I've only been on this board a few days, but have already picked up some invaluable info... thanks, and I look forward to joining the community! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Welcome to FlyerTalk Mister Internet!

I agree with you overall that the 777 is fantastic. So many nice features, but for me it's that high ceiling and overheads that allow even a window seat pax to stand up.

I think you'll find some opinions vary by airline and class flown. For me on United it's:

First Suite: 777
First Class (3-class): 777
Business Class: Downstairs (yup) 747
First Class (2-class): 747
Coach: 777

I know it's not part of this survey, but for what it's worth, my least favorite (design and comfort only, not ability to upgrade) is the 757. What a cattle car. Narrow aisle, bad layout. Sucks overall, IMHO.

Welcome Mister Internet (are your related to Gore?)! It sounds really cool that you and your wife can travel together for work. With that combination, one of you really needs to keep track of miles, points, specials, bonuses, etc.

My favorite plane is the one that leaves on time, arrives on time and is 1/2 full. UA seldom seems to have one of these, nor does anyone else anymore. I am a sucker for the old 747(upstairs business class), then the 777. PremEx knows his planes, as the 757 is really bad.

Make sure you also visit his UA unofficial page to get all the scoop on UA.

Welcome Mister (and Mrs.!) Internet.
My favorite...
...the 747-400 (upper level)

Then again, I haven't tried the 777 yet!

Ahhh... to be 23 again... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Haven't heard anyone chime in on the 767 yet, so I will. I suppose the most important reason I like the 76 over the larger 747, 777, A340, etc. is that the gauge of the aircraft seems near perfect. By this I mean:

1 - The aircraft isn't so huge so that dozens are waiting in line for the lavoratory;

2 - The smaller gauge allows for quicker meal/drink distribution/collection, as well as a little better "personal attention" from the flight attendants;

3 - It's a little easier to board and disembark because there are fewer passengers;

4 - I'm drawn to the 2/3/2 in coach (never one seat away from the aisle), and the first/business class seats typically provide plenty of room as well.

Well, anyway, you get the idea...

When I was 23 I was flying on Lockheed Electra's and DC-6's Those were the days!

In the '80's the United DC-10's had 2 of the center seats in F/C that would turn around to permit 4 people to sit facing across a table, it was great when traveling as a group of 4!

Of today's planes, and based on my traveling on Continental primarily, I'd choose the 777 in BizFirst.

Great question.
My ranking of jets that I have flown, favorite to least favorite.

747- King of the skies.
777- Queen of the skies.
L1011- Great room and feel.
767- ORD12 said it perfectly.
757- I have flown UA and DL one's a few times and I agree that they are a little cramped. But try it with Roll Royce engines (AA, CO, and AW). It's the best thrill ride in the skies since it's so over-powered.
A320 Family- Very roomy for a narrow body.
727- It's a classic. Reminds me of my youth.
A300/310- Always felt it seemed a little on the squeamish side.
DC-10- Great potetial and good comfort, flawed engineering.
717- Improvement over the DC-9 family.
737NG- Vast improvement over the classic 737.
DC-9 Family (including MD80/MD90)- Slow but I enjoy the 2/3 seating.
737 classic- Way too slow.
F100/F28-Feels like a toy jet.
EMB145/35-Like the 1/2 seating and corporate jet feel.
CRJ-Way too uncomfortable for a jet.

MD11, A330/40, Concorde, and Avro/BAE 146- Have not had the oportunity yet too travel on.

As premex notes:

"Business Class: Downstairs (yup) 747

I concur heartily! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Yet my 8 yr old son, when he was 4 or 5 remarks to me in this situation, "Uh..., hey dad. I really hate to tell you this but, uh... we're really not actually in first grade!" He so much prefers upstairs- always! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

cigarman Jun 21, 2000 6:29 pm

Since i have yet to fly the 777 i'll say the 747. Also, really like the ERJ regional jets.

777 also, but for the overhead space. I only travel with one carry-on and while I know it will always fit under the seat in front, on a 777 I know that's never necessary.

Wiirachay Jun 21, 2000 6:56 pm

Based on past experiences:
Domestic coach: A319 - I love those monitors that fold down from the ceiling.

International coach: B777 - I love the personal TV's in coach. Big aircraft feel, but you don't feel like you're cramped because the TV's divert the attention. Quiet engines (I sat in the back of the plane), and lovely landing too! I didn't even notice that the plane touched the ground during landing. 3-3-3 coach configuration is also a plus.

International business/first: B747-400 I like the big/heavy aircraft feel for long-haul flights. First class has a high ceiling in the nose section. Business class upper deck gives an exclusive small cabin feel. Lots of room to walk around. 2-2 seating configuration a plus.

Oh, this is an easy one: The J31.

An excellent topic... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I remember being 23 also... oh how long ago last year seems... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I'll break my "favorites" down like PremEx did (my list is UA biased):

Creature comfort-wise:
First: 747-400 (I haven't experienced the Suite yet so maybe this will change) I like the more secluded nature of the first cabin in the 747-400. i.e. everyone doesn't have to walk past you while boarding.
Business: 747-400 lower deck, specifically rows 5-7. Upper deck is cool, but frankly you give up too much space to be up there.
Economy: 767-300. Can't beat the 2-3-2 config.

If I have to be on a narrowbody, then it's the 727. But definitely not because of creature comforts. I just like the plane. In general, if I ran the world, all flights under two hours would be on 727s, 2-4 hours would be on A320s (yes, even an ol' Boeing fan like me can admit that in that category, Airbus has 'em beat), 4-6 hours on 767-300s, 6-10 hours on 777s, and greater than 10 hours on 747s.

I love the 777 I flew from Calgary to Denver!
