unpublished fares

Some enlightenment is sought in this query. What is an unpublished fare? The usual jargon I read or hear is that I can upgrade from any published fare with such and such a certificate. What can one do with an unpublished fare, and how does one get "unpublished fares? Any help would be appreciated

Unpublished fares include some special fares for travel industry professionals (tour operators, travel agents, some travel journalists, etc.) and I believe specially negiotiated airfares for some special events, conventions, etc. may be considered unpublished fares...

Some other examples of unpublished fares are consolidator fares and "negotiated" corporate fares (fares negotiated directly between the airline and a corporation). Also, in some cases published fares on which a $ off coupon was used or zone fares available with a special coupon are considered unpublished (i.e., do not allow any other promotional bonus such as upgrades).

I think e-fares are also considered to be unpublished.

Also, senior coupon booklets and youth coupon booklets are considered unpublished.

A quick note, e-fare(s) at least w/AA are considered published for obtaining upgrades, and do count towards PLT/GLD etc.

Here is an additional thread (look towards the middle/end) with some discussion on published vs. unpublished fares (at least for AA)

Does anyone know if Student Fares (issued, for example, by travel agencies like STA Travel) are considered published fares for the purposes of Elite AA upgrades? These fares do qualify for frequent flyer miles as regular, discounted economy fares.

Does anyone know if Student Fares (issued, for example, by travel agencies like STA Travel) are considered published fares for the purposes of Elite American Airlines upgrades? These fares do qualify for frequent flyer miles as regular, discounted economy fares.

What about "L" fare code fares on American. Are these published fares eligible for upgrades?

Student fares are considered by most airlines to be UNPUBLISHED. DL does not let you upgrade them even though they are not notorious "L" fares. Basically, anything that you can not buy from a regular travel agency is not published. Consolidator fares and student fares are not published. However, youth fares and senior fares purchased through the airline are PUBLISHED.

And net-saaver, web fares are considered published and count toward elite levels and give miles. Those fares restricted to a select group and not published for the public so that anyone can get them are not published. I think it is always best to check with the airlines for your particular situation. My husband did get ALL his miles on a TWA flight bought through Priceline, and he was able to go stand-by on an earlier flight - two things that priceline says, i believe, that you can't get???

Before I had my travel agent print my NWA ticket I called Continental to confirm that discounted B-fare (non-published) is elegible for upgrades using my Continental miles and as per the CO rep "we go by the rules of NWA so you have to contact them".
So I contacted NWA and as per the NWA rep "we go by the rules of CO however we do check availability". I have been going back and forth about 4 times and decided to give up on them and change my ticket to an H-fare which saved me and my wife together 600 US$ except I won't get an upgrade to business. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mad.gif

Maybe some other time.
