This looks like a dream come true for people in Dallas :-) I am so jealous they don't fly to New York. Does anyone know if they are actually flying yet? If so has any one flown them?

They were to fly the end of Feb, but that got pushed back to late March due to some sort of problem with the FAA. Fear not, AA will be running 56 seat F100's and later, MD80's out of DAL as well.

Living in the Dallas area, I will be 'tickled pink' (how's that for Texas-speak?) when they do begin flights. The last I have heard is that they haven't completed all the safety checks. I curse AA and the Wright amendment every time I have drive past Love Field (where Legend will fly out of) to get to over-priced DFW. For some ludicrous reason, AA argues that the Dallas/Ft. Worth area cannot support 2 airports. Methinks the real reason is that Southwest flies out of Love Field and AA is afraid of opening up Love Field. The Wright amendment only permits jets with fewer than 57 seats to fly beyond the states adjoining Texas, which is why Legend has re-configured their DC-9s to 56 seats. I, for one, will be very happy when they begin flying.

My travel agent at work said that Legend is going to start a non-stop flight to Vegas that leaves Love Field at 9:00 p.m. on Friday and returns at 1:00 a.m. Monday morning. Perfect for a full weekend of gaming.

Also, if you fly on Legend in the first three months of operation, you get double FF miles for the rest of your life or the life of the airline.

I heard somewhere that AA will be flying F100's to LA from Dallas. Last I saw the range of F100's was just 1200 miles and DFW-LAX is more like 1250.

Perhaps the extra mileage can be obtained by using the hairspray that the typical North Texan keeps handy.

I am interested in your wright amendment comment being an economist. How does the wright amendment work and how does Southwest get around it?

The Wright Amendment (WA) was put into place to protect DFW. It is named after fomer congressman Wright. Basically the WA stated that no aircraft of more than 56 seats may fly from Love Field to any state that does not border Texas. It has since been amended to include a couple of other states as well.

Southwest kinda gets around it by flying from Love Field to a bunch of airports in adjoining states. From those airports, pax can then fly a different flight to anywhere in the Southwest system. However, the flights must be purchased seperately. Southwest cannot sell them as a connection. So if you wanted to go DAL-LAS, you would need to buy a DAL-ABQ ticket and a ABQ-LAS ticket. This is not as cost effective as a DAL-LAS ticket would be.

In reading the PlaneBusiness BB (http://www.planebusiness.com/cgi-bin/ultimate.cgi), the prevailing opinion there is that the WA will eventually be repealed. Once that happens, Southwest will flood the Dallas market with low cost flights across the country.
