Sharing a cab...
Have any of you done this?
On my YEG - YVR flight today, the guy next to me strike up a conversation. He then ask me whether I would like to share a cab to downtown YVR since out hotel is almost next to each other. I agree... no problem since that would cut the fare in half. |
Of course, who hasn't? It saves money and efficiently utilizes cabs, which may be in short supply, especially at odd hours (i.e., "late," not "1, 3, 5, 7, 9," etc.). What's the significance of your question?

I've dome this numerous times. Another way to save money on ground transportation when your hotel does not offer a free shuttle is to take a free hotel shuttle to another hotel that is close to where you will be staying and then take a taxi to your hotel. This works if you do your homework in advance and the airport is especially far from the city.
If anyone hassles you (which has never happened) I would simply play stupid (I'm good at that) and apologize, saying my company changed my itinerary and I didn't notice it until after walking into the lobby. ------------------ Addicted to airline miles? Check out: The Airline Mileage Workshop |
if you tip the (shuttle) driver - he will be happy to provide this service anyway - and just having a drink at the bar (of the hotel providing the shuttle service) is also an (appreciated) option to feel less 'guilty'..

On a November trip to Washington, DC. I flew into BWI, took the MARC commuter train to Union Station in DC and arrived after midnight due to train delays. Usually I take the Metro if it's before midnight, so, in this case, there was a very long line at the taxicab curb, and a person who was delegating cabs.
You HAD TO SHARE a cab (don't know if this was a concrete law or whatever, but no one raised a stink) with anyone going in the same direction (National, Georgetown, downtown, Capitol, etc.). The fare was the same, I didn't get a discount, and the delegators put at least 4 people in each cab. I don't know about profit, but it made sense to me...I don't want to be the one at the end of the line if no one shared a cab, I'm tired and just wanted to relax, the amount of gas, time and energy saved is considerable, and everything happened so fast. Better than waiting. BAM, load up, I'm there. Of course, being the short person...had to take the middle seat in the back. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif |
