Chase limit - 4 times a year

I ordered TC checks a month ago after receiving "the letter" but talking to Beata. I ordered some yesterday and it was cancelled. I called and was told you are allowed only 4 times a year. I am waiting for a call back from a supervisor since this is in fact my 4th of the year (12 month window, not calendar year). No call. Those of you pacing yourselves be prepared. Once a month might not avoid "the letter" How many of you have ordered more than 4 and got them?

I wonder could you tell me were OnePass miles the only miles you could earn via Currency To Go?

Tute84 Feb 14, 2000 4:38 pm

You can pay with any Visa or Mastercard.

That's interesting. I'm not inclined to believe that their "system" will catch you whatever they may otherwise claim. I will be getting my 4th order tomorrow. Two have been late (arriving the next next business day). I once received two on the same day (in separate envelopes).

If there is a 4 per 12 month limit, I guess there is no need to pace myself anymore. We'll find out in 3 weeks! Stay tuned...

I fail to see the attraction of buying currency to go .

Here are the facts as I see :
1) Built into the price of currency conversion, is a 5 - 6 % hidden charge. So in reality, $1000 of US Dollars will not equal what Chase is returning in a foreign currency. In simpler terms you are paying $1000 to get about $940-950 in like foreign money.
2) While holding Chase's curency to go, you collect NO interest.More money in Chase's pocket, less in yours.
3) If you really need the extra miles,UA,BA,CO etc will let you buy miles at the rate of $25 per 1000 miles.

No wonder Chase will deliver the foreign currency free of charge. The margin rate for this of business is better than its' credit cards.

Finally ,only US regs. concerning money transfers preclude Chase from opening the gates wide open for unlimited purchases.

Yousee, most of us were buying dollar traveler checks, with no service charge and no shipping. So, $900 of traveler checks cost me $900 and I got 1,800 airmiles (double promotion on my click citi card). I deposited the checks in my bank and earned a few cents of interest until my credit card bill arrived.

My colleague Anne is interested in knowing if these travelers checks can only be purchased with Chase Visas that earn OnePass miles. Can I purchase them with, say, a US Airways Visa and earn Dividend Miles, or do I have to use my Chase Visa?

freakflyer Feb 16, 2000 10:21 pm

Yes, you can use any visa or mastercard. However, don't abuse it. Please.

I wonder if they have the 4 time limit if you order currency as well as TC. I went to France last week and placed an order for $100 in FF and $900 TC. Now do I have 4 more or only 3? I'll see what they do.

Has anyone done this more than four times?

Anne at WebFlyer Feb 21, 2000 10:05 am

Could someone please explain? Regarding being able to charge for TC using any Visa or MasterCard, why would Chase care if it was not awarding the miles and secondly I thought most affinity cards preclude members from earning miles from currency transactions?

Comicwoman Feb 21, 2000 10:39 am

Anne, I think the Chase's problem is that they aren't making money on the US dollar transactions. They pay shipping and the credit card commission.

Since the transaction was not a 'cash advance' (I have no idea why not, but it was not....I did it four times), you get points. I was one of those that 'got the call' and no longer am welcome there.

I have never got a call or a letter, and I have ordered several batches, some with and some without foreign currency. About half of the orders never went through---no notification of any kind from Chase. The other half came as advertised and my card was billed. Frankly I think it's a pretty shoddy operation.

doc Feb 22, 2000 6:02 am

QL is quite correct, IMHO. I ordered once an all was well. The the second time, a month later- nothing received and no notification. I followed up and finally it was delivered- but with no phone card and no signing for it, as supposedly required.

Third time over three months- nothing. I follow up and the agent tells me I'm not eligible-been cut off. he tells me I got a "letter" which I did not. I talk to the supervisor, "Sharat" and he LAUGHs at me! He tells me he hears this all day and that I'm not getting anything, 4/yr, we didn't expect... etc!

After I explained further, he says he's going to investigate immediately and get right back to me tommorrow at the latest. He promises and assures me! That was 2 months ago and I've followed up twice and left messages for him to no avail.

Three times over 3 months is not abuse in my book! The complete failure to communicate is inexcusable. They ask for Email, phone and address and use none of them! Two of my neighbors who are big honcho's on the invetment banking side and in trading at Chase just chuckled (and outright laughed in one case) at what a bunch of "clowns" the consumer division is!

The whole promo is such a shame and embarrasment for them. All they had to do was post the "rules" on their marginally functional website. I for one had enough with Chase! Better service from Mypoints!

SMessier Feb 22, 2000 7:35 am

I couldn't agree more with doc and QL (regrettably almost). I have yet to be able to order $1,000, although the web site clearly states that this is the limit for UPS delivery, and have ended up ordering $950 four times. How long has it been since that problem was there, and why is it not being fixed? For one of my orders they took the liberty of rounding up to $1000, but not the others.

Whenever I call to get tracking numbers, it sounds like quite a challenge for them to give me anything. A couple of times I was aksed (defiantly) how I had gotten "that" phone number. (The toll free number from their web site).

In any case, the moment of truth will be next month when I place my 5th order. BTW, they always ask for my phone number when I call to get an update - I wonder if this is how they really do flag repeated orders?
