does anyone use standard vs "saver" awards

This came up in another thread and I meant to ask: airlines have "planaahead" or "saver" awards which are capacity controlled versus "standard" awards which are not.

I couldn't even find standard award charts in UA's material, just mention of them. On other airlines standard awards seem to be twice the miles of "saver" type awards.

Does *anyone* use "standard" awards?

I have on United several times. Standard on United is not always double. Example of free Coach:

25,000 Saver
40,000 Standard

I never did so far. I use miles mostly for upgrades anyway.

As long as you "planahead" you can usually use "saver". I always do, but seldom have I booked a vacation trip less than 6 months in advance. It is the only way to match up several flight (with points) and several hotels (with points) in different locations and not go crazy!
