Car Rental Miles

Has anyone ever tried earning more then the standard miles for a long term car rental? I need to rent a car for approximately three weeks long. With Thrifty you get 500 miles per rental. The thought occured to me that if I returned the car every few days and re-rented it, wouldn't I qualify for the 500 miles each time? I only say this because the distance to take the car back is only about 15 minutes away from where I'll be staying with family. I would appreciate any input on this anyone may have. I even thought about changing rental companies each time but the cost with the others is an increase of $7 to $11 more a day thus Thrifty is the best priced for my time frame.

Thanks,
Jan

You should check with the car rental company. Last year I checked with Alamo and they told me that each rental qualifies for miles, even ones which are done back to back, and I took advantage of that. The rules for car rental miles are in a bit of flux right now, so you should check with the car rental company about their rules.

With the changes in awards for most of the majors to earning miles by the $ spent or the number of days rented, the companies are doing away with the incentive to play such games. So far Alamo and Thrifty still have the flat 250 or 500 miles, but Hertz, Avis and National are all changing their methods of crediting miles this summer, so be sure and stay informed, as the others are likely to quickly follow suit.
