TWA Elite upgrade changes
I just received my new mini-guide for Aviators Elite and Elite 1 membership, effective March 1, 2000. A disturbing thing that I read seems to say that the policy of unlimited, free upgrades from any fare for Elite members will be soon changing. The policy will remain the same for Elite 1, with full-fare coach tickets upgradable at time of booking, and discount fares 72 hours prior.
However, for Elite members, full fares will still be eligible for upgrade 48 hours prior to flight, but discount fares will now require a surcharge for upgrade. It looks like these upgrades can still clear 24 hours in advance, but the charge will be based on mileage. There is currently a charge to upgrade for non-elite members and for Elite and Elite 1 to upgrade companions, but not sure what the new price charge is or will be for Elites on discount fares. This unlimited upgrade policy on all fares was one of the best features of Aviators. Seems like a bad move to take it away. While F/C cabins seem to have been getting more full lately, it can't hurt to give Elites upgrade privileges from discount fares. At 24 hours before flight, all full-fares and higher Elite 1/Platinum members have been taken care of...with a few seats set aside for last minute F/C purchases. If TWA is going to do this, at least it should let Elite members earn free upgrade certificates as was the case before the unlimited upgrade program went into effect last year. |
