Another Way?

Thanks everyone for looking into this.

I would assume that there is federal regulations for this on the IRA specifically the SEP IRA as there are regulations on interest earning Business money market accounts.

I do have an idea though... Could you open up a Ameritrade brokerage account and earn some miles then later turn that into a SEP or basic IRA account? I may have to call to see if this is possible for tax reasons.. @:-)

miles for financial services

I work at bank one and we partner through united. they offer a miles debit card, 2500 to start 1 point for ever two dollars. a credit card 1 for 1. my brother had a united credit card and was sent a promo for 15000 miles if they opened a checking account at bank one. i have also seen free tickets if you open an investment account. i think my brother got 25000 united miles in one day for bringing over his 401k and opening a checking account and getting the debit card. the one downer i see with the debit card with bank one is that they dont average the money spent on the card. they go per transaction. unlike the northwest debit card through us bank. for instance if i spent 5.99 at the gas station three times they would only credit me 2 miles each purchase.

Points/Miles and decent interest rate for IRA?

While a deal like the SPG points on Ameritrade for new deposits is excellent, one of the restrictions is that you cannot use it if your deposit is for an IRA. Does anyone know the "best" (some points or miles with a decent interest rate) deal around where an IRA deposit IS eligible? I know you can't have it both ways (lots of points/miles and a high interest rate) but I thought maybe some FTers might had been looking at tax time for the best scenarios and could share their insights. Deals that get DL, UA, CO or AA miles or PC or HH points would be of most value to me but feel free to suggest additional affiliations since other FTers might have other preferences.

Thanks for the quick response, UpgradeMe, (no relation :) ) and for not blasting me for not being able to find the earlier thread. Looks like I'll just have to settle for the high interest rates. Moderator, please close before my ignorance is known to even more FTers.

You 'might' consider first opening a regular account .. then use that to fund an IRA.

IRA contributions via CC?

Any possible way to launder IRA contributions through a CC or any other way to get some miles out of them? Probably not, but I'm always surprised at the tricks I discover around here so I thought I'd give it a shot.

I think it all depends on who is managing your IRA. AFAIK, there is no legal restriction one way or another.

My guess is that because of the provisions in the Patriots Act, companies will only accept contributions by check. Most don't even accept cash.

I'm assuming you're talking about direct contributions, as employer matching would only be done via direct deposit.

Yes. I need to make a contribution to do some major reduction work on my tax due. I much prefer contributing to me rather than the government who will just turn around and throw it in the toilet, at least what's left of it after they pay all the government officials to throw it in the toilet. But I digress. I'm so miles-on-the-brain now that I hate spending any money, let alone large amounts of money, without finding a miles-earning angle.

Not that I'm aware of. All of mine come from my checking acct. On the form(s) it only shows checking info, or at least the ones I've seen.

You could always open up a Citi account, fund it with a CreditCard, get miles, then pay directly to your IRA through Citi, and pay off the CreditCard from your other bank account. take it from there, it should work out for you.
