new american express card

A while ago, there was a post about a new american express card with an annual fee of $1000. It included automatic elite status on several different airlines and hotel programs. Does anyone have the details of this program? I wasn't able to find anything by searchine the archives. Thanks!

That sounds like the Amex Centurion Card. Check this link out:

At this point it's by invitation only. Presumably some of this is to build up demand. The instant elite status on CO, DL, TW, and US is all mid tier. I would guess they are buying the miles in some form. Not sure what they are trying to prove with this product, but it does have a dedicated phone line with prompts, reps, etc. 1-877-877-0987. The guy I spoke with was pretty arrogant, which was sort of unnecessary. If you enjoy being talked to like you're a piece of dirt, give them a call. I have an Amex platinum card. fly nearly 200,000 miles annually, run my own business, and serve on the board of a good sized public company...and I don't seem to qualify.

Poor baby.

Just spoke to American Express, he said only cardholders who spent $20,000 a month in travel expenses were sent the offer, and even then, it was a select few. They would not discuss the annual fee, promotion, benefits, nada! (Only if I could provide the promotion/invitation code I received on my application.)If I find all this info out, Randy better give me a big EYE SPY reward!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Well the qualifications are new, but the benefits and costs were detailed in the previous (referenced) thread. That thread pointed to this news release from Amex:

See the other thread for why this is not such a great deal over the Platinum card, assuming you are already an elite flyer on at least one airline.

It's not such a great deal over the Starwood Optima card! I canceled my Platinum when this one came out.

It's time to stop talking about AE 's arrogance concerning their Black Card. After being an AE Plat . member since 1985 ,I canceled THE CARD this year .In the back of my mind ,I feel these Black card holders have a super status amongst other fellow mid tier ff members. Why continue to support a company that introduces many new competitors for upgrades ?
My business goes to MP card and the AA card.

Absolutely not true. I spend nowhere near $20,000 a month, and I was not sent the offer, but I have the card.

So the $20,000 requirement is not true, then does anyone know the criteria??? And WHY would they tell me this on the phone???

deelmakur Dec 27, 1999 5:46 am

Because they're full of it. This is the equivalent of keeping people standing out front of a half filled dance club. It creates a desire to get in (and appears to work). It has a big fee, so it's designed to be a moneymaker. If it were just a perk for a few of their big spenders they would give it to them.

The rumors are always better than the truth ...

I have a Platinum Card, and I remember people telling me you had to spend tons of money to even qualify, so I called them up and the rep told me, ten years as an AMEX card holder or $5,000/year in spending, which isn't a whole lot when it comes down to it (less than $500/month).

I really doubt that the Black is $20,000/month ... $20,000/year I would believe, which would be four times the threshold for the Platinum Card.
