KLM about 1995.
I got to platinum in a few years and then went back down to bone or wood, whatever it is. Actually I just got back up to silver.
Joined Qantas about 2001, bit the bullet and paid the $100, had platinum for a while then back to gold and now am LTG.
Burnt a lot of points and got good value out of it. I had started with BAEC but got frustrated that I was doing long haul on budget fares and getting no points so switched to Qantas for that reason.

A little fuzzy on specifics but first Pan Am in early 1989, same time as bought then-cheap tickets New Orleans to Nice, then back from Rome to the U.S. This was in the wake of Pan Am 103 so the deals were significant. A year or so later Continental to play a fun game of $19 RT back and forth from home to San Antonio three times in a day that earned promotional miles enough to go to the UK. Or something.

UA 1982(?)
My mileage plus number was in the 20000 range, then "Continental" changed it to
"WT......" It was nice having a 5 digit number.
Aadvantage acct is "B......"
When UA started flights to Oz, 2 RT F tickets were ~75k miles!
