Cheapest flight in the world?
A few days ago I read an article in BA's onboard magazine about a twice-daily flight up in the Orkneys that's scheduled to take only two minutes! Anyway, it got me thinking -- if that's the shortest flight in the world, what's the cheapest? I called BA, but the rep on the phone was annoyed by the question and couldn't give an answer. Where could I find out? I don't care where the flight begins or ends, but it needs to be eligible to accrue frequent flyer miles in a major program, and it needs to fly frequently enough that I could fly several round trips in a day. (Executive Platinum on a shoestring budget, here I come...)

You are surprised that the BA agent was annoyed by this?

Some of the cheapest fares recently have been the "unpublished fares". These are the internet fares available on the airline website or e-mailed to you after signup on the airline website. They are only short duration sales with travel time restrictions. Some of the airlines with these fares are US, DL, CO, NW and AA. However, trying to find "the cheapest" fare is like trying to catch a moving target, since they are changing as you read this. Isn't yield management wonderful?

Cheapest flight I know is on TG, CNX-CEI. $18.80 tax included. When you're in Chiang Mai be sure to have a drink with my brother.

Are you referring specifically to BA's flights? Any flights within the UK are generally more expensive than say between LAX and LAS.

Hello,
I would share your interest in flying very cheap tickets to get extra miles...sometimes it works out best that way. One of the best places to look is www.bestfares.com. It costs $60 a year. Lately I have seen round-trip fares for say $60 or so. There was once a DFW-MEM fare for around $20, but it only lasted a couple of hours. The fares change all the time as well. There used to ba one-way fares from DCA bo BOS for $67 with tax included. You could fly DCA-EWR-CLE-BOS for $67 each way. Years ago I remember a fare BOS-MHT for $19 on Business Express (at the time DL commuter airline). There is talk somewhere on this board about a DL $20.02 fare...not sure what it is for. May check DL forum myself. |
i once got a $85 RT fare from DCA to SLC on Cont. don't know if it was a mistake, or not. no restriction (except for sat night stay). it was only available a few hours early one Weds morning last Sept.
maybe the airline was doing some market research to see how many people moved (even knew about) on this low price. jexjex ------------------ |
Boomer (I think?!) posted in the Continental forum that there was a $25 DFW-MEM through IAH available. I priced it out using Travelocity Best Fare Finder and was able to get the fare. I think they forgot the 0.

I paid $18 round trip between Seattle and Spokane during a promotion a few years ago.

Once in a while there is a $25 return fare between San Jose and Reno, including taxes.

Northwest currently has a $25 fare from Detroit to Indianapolis. This fare has been available for at least the last three months! |
Cheap fares are out there. Bestfares.com is a good place to pick these up (don't need a membership).
In terms of lowest cost per mile, there are some incredible deals that come up. Recently had SNA to CMH (orange county to columbus, OH) for $122 roundtrip, no Sat stay. In terms of pure cost, not cheap, but in terms of mile value, a great deal. I know someone who bought enough of these to make platinum status by February, all for less than $1500, getting 100k in miles to boot. I'm sure there have been some even better deals out there. Perhaps we should open this thread up: not just cheapest ticket, but best mile value. I'm interested in what's been the best. |
