Beginner Help with BOS -> LAX
 

I know this is an elementary post for many, but I'd appreciate any help.

I'm trying to plan a ~3 week round trip flight from BOS to LAX any time from June 20th to the end of the month. I have a plethora of Amex and UR points, about 10k AA, and 50k US Air miles. Best time to leave / return? Is it worth utilizing points for ticket purchase? Possible to upgrade to Business without spending a fortune? Thanks.

Have you looked at the mileage requirements for an award ticket?

Are award seats even available?

Have you looked at the price of a flight if you don't use points?

yea. make sure there's award space first. plug some dates into united to see if that's the best option. it's high season for traveling and I'm running into lack of award space =\

I looked into award travel on UA for June 20/returning July 11. Saver award economy is available for only one flight on June 20; leave BOS 5:58 PM, arrive LAX 10:45 PM, with a connection in Cleveland. Return is available on July 11 leaving LAX 10:40 AM and arriving in BOS 10:25 PM, with a connection in Newark. Several return options are also available July 10.

The OP might also check aa.com for "MileSAAver" award seats. Both MR and UR points can be converted to BA Avios, and Avios can be redeemed for MileSAAver award seats (but not for "AAnytime" award seats) on AA metal. There's even a 35% bonus now for MR conversions to Avios.

Not really on topic. But I would check just paying for a flight like that. I am sure you can find 1 pretty cheap. Even more so with so much time left I am sure you can find something cheap paying. I don't know just figure not worth wasting miles for a flight that will probably be pretty cheap.

call a travel agent and let them figure it out for you....or get off your butt and read, 10 minutes of research would answer your question.

In my experience, flights between BOS and LAX are so cheap that it does not make sense to use points. Check Jetblue and Virgin.
