Well, the merged FF system might not kick in this year. And I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't until January 1st of some future year, for simplicity sake.

It's not all about credit cards

They say the merger will be completed third quarter this year. So we have a bit of time to acquire miles in both programs, and time to book Star Alliance tickets with U.S. Airways miles before they become American Airlines (One World) miles. Some thoughts on planning ahead:

The U.S. Air program will be merged into the American Airlines program. So plan to gather as many U.S. Air miles now as possible before those opportunities disappear. Here are some suggestions of things to think about and perhaps discuss here. The locations references listed in the parentheses are to my website below so newbies can find descriptions of and links to them easily. None of these programs earn me any kind of commission.

  • Rewards Network (iDine) (On the Other Programs I Like page in the Dining section.)
  • E-miles, (On the Click for Miles, Money, and Good Causes page in the Click for Miles section.)
  • E-Rewards. (On the Other Programs I Like page in the Surveys section.)
  • The many ways to earn U.S. Airways miles through shopping, including its shopping portal, wine purchase programs, Skymall, satellite TV, etc. Go to the Buying Stuff page, click on the page you get (important) and do a word search on U.S. Airways
  • Sharebuilder. (On the Finance page in the Stock and Bond Brokers section.)
  • 21st Century Insurance - miles for quotes and/or purchase. (On the Finance page in the Insurance section.)
  • SentryInsurance - miles for quotes and/or purchase. (On the Finance page in the Insurance section.)
  • EnergyPlus. (But compare to its American Airlines miles offers.) (On the Other Programs I Like page in the Energy section.)
  • The various programs in the Business Programs section of my Other Programs I Like page.
  • Other programs I list on my Other Programs I Like page. Click on the page you get (important), then do a word search on U.S. Airways.
  • The huge number of hotels at which you can earn U.S. Airways miles for stays. (But many of them will also give you American Airlines miles instead.)
  • Please post here what I missed. Thanks.

AA has a great milage rate to europe (fly and return before may 15th) for 40k miles (with a refund of 10% of those miles) if fee's charged to your AA credit card. Im concerned that after the merger is done this nice deal will be taken off the boards. For the same dates, US airways is asking for 60k airmiles.

Any idea if, when or how long this specific deal might last?

The 40k is milesAAver off peak. I don't expect that to get phased out anytime soon.

The 10% refund is for having a Citi AAdvantage platinum credit card. It's good for up to a 10k refund per year. That too isn't changing anytime soon.

You've got some terrific resources there. I'm taking a closer look at some of the offerings and will likely dip my toes in the water on several. Thanks for researching all this for us and putting it up on your site.

I was wondering about Sharebuilder. I, like many others did this one for Grand Slam, haven't been back there since 2011. Is it possible to do it again with a new account? I see it's now Capital 1 instead of ING so maybe possible to get the bonus again.

I did the 21st Century quote a few weeks ago, just posted today so still working.

Tiki Feb 17, 2013 8:16 pm

There's also the 100% Buy miles bonus until 28 Feb. Does anyone think this will be the last time they run this promo? Or are they more likely to run it trying to raise more cash?

The 40k off-season award has been around for many years. Since it's an AA award, my guess is that it'll still be around in the future.

The US off-season awards...35k Y / 55k J but a much narrower travel window...are probably an endangered species at this point.

The 55K J award to Europe is already history: when you check the DM award chart for offseason travel, there's now an "N/A" for the entry for business class "Between North America or Hawaii and Europe".
