Says you need to have received an email invitation. I didn't and but still received the confirmation.

Worked for me, thanks OP.

Though:

I may be an over-entitled elite
who does not purchase premium fares
and may be subject to UA random acts of sweeps where miles may be deducted at any time

I don't quite understand - do you just get the miles from registering your card? My cards are already registered so I guess that would disqualify me

Try to log in, unregister your MP card, clear cookies, then follow the link, log in again and re-register

Registered my card and the wife's as well. Thanks.

By the way, if in a few months United claws the miles back does that count as MP "activity" and reset the miles expiration clock?

I don't think you need to use the Mileage Explorer card, people reported getting the bonus with other credit cards
