If you will only rent a few times per year you may want to begin by looking at the car rental companies which have tie-ins with your primary frequent flyer program.

There is also some relevant discussion in this thread:

try car rental program points

Unless you need miles to get to an award you're close to, I recommend exploring the car rental company points programs. I like Hertz because it doesn't require a fixed number of rentals per year. There are always times where the car rental costs on personal travel are really high, and you may be able to get a free rental with the car rental company points.

Are the programs pretty similar?

It sounds as if you need a starting point before doing your own research. Try these links:

Airline Miles for Car Rental?

I'm going to start renting cars for my job and am curious as to whether there are any good promotions where you can get airline miles, especially United, AA, or BA Avios, for renting a car. Anyone know of any?

Thanks!

used_wardrobe's question is a variant of the previous discussion in this thread. However, if you specifically want airline miles I would begin by looking at the website for each mileage program that you use to see which rental companies are partners.

For example, the AA information is here:

http://www.aa.com/i18n/AAdvantage/ea...lCars/main.jsp

UA is here:

http://www.united.com/CMS/en-US/mark...lPartners.aspx

BA is here:

In addition to what mia provided, I would recommend looking (a) in the individual rental car forums to see if they have a master thread listing all the promotions (as not all the very best promotions are easy to find on the airlines' own websites), and (b) checking this site:

http://frequentflyerbonuses.com/

There, click on Airline Offers if you want to see bonus offers sorted by airline, or Car Rental Offers if you want to see bonus offers sorted by car rental agency.

And, btw, I suggest you check all of these, as each one may be incomplete. Now that there is no longer a master thread for car rentals (since Evan! disappeared) in this forum (or elsewhere on FT), you have to look several places to have a better chance of finding the very best offer for your needs.

I hope not, because the one from Avis is pretty useless. It's short-expiration free 2-day weekend rental certificate, which do not include all taxes and fees, do not include any insurance (but at the same time make credit card collision insurance unusable), and you have to pay for anything beyond two days, and you cannot use them without a "Saturday stay". And btw you don't earn any free rental points or certificates, at most rental agencies, if you earn airline miles (or hotel or rail points) on your rentals.

In fact, you should also look into using airline miles for car rentals. That's possible with several of the airlines. And it's quite likely using miles would pay for the rental "more completely" than (at least) one of these very limited certificates that Avis issues.
