Need advice Car rental in NYC

Mod please move this to an appropriate thread if this is not correct

I am looking for a 3-day car rental in NYC or more specifically LGA. The dates are from 24th to 27th of May
I searched on Hotwire, Orbitz, Expedia, basically everywhere and the cheapest I can find is $230 for a mini van and $250 for an economy car.

I have 500 Hertz point (Gold member) and Executive level at Emerald Club

I wonder if anyone knows of a way to use Amex points or Ultimate points or Southwest points or any other ways to save money on car rental

Thanks a lot

How many passengers would be in the car with you? I booked a Dodge Caravan from Dollar at JFK a few days ago using AA points and the redemption rates were great. Also, I'd look into Priceline's Name Your Price option for car rentals as it helped me snag a car for $30 a day several years back.

There are my friend and I
I have been trying to use Priceline name your own price with $3 per day code. But it hasn't got to the price I like
I guess it is because of the memorial day weekend and I am not sure the rate will drop closer to the rental date or not

Alright, I have a way for you to get the car for around 35 dollars a day out of LGA. Create an American Airlines account (no need for you to have miles in the account) and go to www.useaamiles.com Prior to making a search, click on AAdvantage member login and log into your account. Now, search for car rentals on the current page out of LGA; you should see economy cars available for 3000-4000 miles a day. If you click through to the confirmation page, it will allow you to supplement miles for cash at a 1.1 cent ratio. Using this method, you will be able to get a car from National on your dates for $35 a day. I just checked and they have many cars available for this price. Having done the same thing 2 days ago, I can confirm this method works.

Thank you so much, it works and it is the best tip ever
One think is that they want you to pay at least 1,000 AA miles. Now I can see how precious AA miles can be. You just save me more than $100 and that is why I love Flyertalk so much. It would be even more awesome if you can cancel the car rental and get money back in miles

Here is the term I talk about
All AAdvantage® members are welcome to participate, but a minimum of 1,000 AAdvantage miles and a credit card with a United States, Canada or U.S.V.I mailing address is required for each purchase. AAdvantage car & hotel awards are available as mileage-only awards or as a combination of AAdvantage miles plus cash, which allow you to use fewer AAdvantage miles by making up the difference in cash. Your AAdvantage miles will be deducted at the time of purchase. If you choose to pay for your purchase with AAdvantage miles plus currency, you'll also pay any currency due at that time with a major credit card.

Do you by any chance have a Capital One card? I just checked those dates in their rewards portal and found a compact for $68 total including a taxes and fees at LGA.

I believe you can transfer AMEX point to Starwood and then to AAdvantage although the ratio isn't the best. I wish it was possible to cancel and refund it in the form of miles although their customer service stated that the refund will be given in the form of the payment you used. Good luck!

Thanks, I got some AA points lying around so I booked the cars right away
@MarkMColo, I don't have Capital One. Thanks though I will keep it in mind

Nope, I have no status with AA and I was able to take advantage of this deal. It might help that I have the citi AA card linked to my account although I don't believe that it's a requirement.

I agree that it’s a very nice website and service. I used it a couple of months ago to book a “full” hotel that I could not book any other way. I was quite pleased with the redemption value. (Naturally, I was chastized here for not getting a very good cpm value.:()

That would be sweet! If the car rental terms are anything like the hotel terms, the change and cancellation policies are very strict.

I have wrote multiple emails and called several times, although every agent stated that you will get a refund in the original form of payment (miles and cash). They do give refunds, although the fee is $150 to cancel the reservation.

Does the price quoted by AA include taxes and fees? If not, how are we going to know the total price?

factory81 May 18, 2012 10:07 pm

heres my advice, don't rent a car

The lowest rate I see is 7,000 AAdvantage miles per day for an Economy Car? This is at LG from 6/8/12 thru 6/11/12.
