Need Help on return leg from BRU

Hello- First time posting here, so please point me in to the right forum if this is the wrong place to post this.

I am traveling from Chicago to Belgium in May via American and the return leg was rerouted to include a 5 hour layover. I am looking for advice for good alternative airlines to change to.

I am relatively new to the game, and have decent balances but limited understanding on how to use them efficiently.

I have approximately the following balances:
AA - 160K
BA - 130K
USAir - 80K
Amex - 75K
Chase - 55K

Is there a good alternative method for my wife and I to get back using the above? I would love to fly first, but I am not sure who has a good product that I can use. I do not want to spend a lot of miles to fly on an inferior first class product.

Many thanks for the help!!

Welcome!

You might receive more assistance if you were more specific about the details. What is your current schedule? Did you obtain the ticket on AA with $ or with miles? Have you spoken with AA to see if they can offer an alternative to a 5-hour layover?

The flight was booked with points. Two 20K milesaver economy tickets. I called AA and they did not have a viable alternative.

I would be willing to pony up for a decent first class product if something is available.

Did you ask AA to check availability on partner carrier Jet Airways from BRU to JFK/EWR/YYZ, and thence to ORD on AA? Because Jet is not a oneworld member, it's possible that the agent did not consider searching for award-seat availability on Jet.

Yet another possibility to explore is redeeming BA Avios for travel on Aer Lingus BRU-DUB-ORD.

That JFK-BRU flight isn't exactly enjoyable. It's a 757...

AMS is 2 hours by train and if you buy your tickets online they're only 19 euro. CDG also isn't that far, but is much more stressful.
