Continental OnePass to AA Transfer Options
 

Hi,
I am trying to find ways to transfer my OnePass miles into AA miles. I heard there used to be a way to do this through Amtrak, but that option is no longer available.

Can someone provide some advice on how best to transfer CO OnePass miles to AAdvantage miles?

Amtrak closed that a long time ago.

I believe you can still use diners club (not sure since I am not part of diners club)

Airlines award miles to encourage loyalty. Permitting transfers to competing airline would undermine the very reason that frequent flyer programs exist.

Until 12.31.2011 you can transfer OnePass miles to Amtrak Guest Rewards points. The transfer can only be made by telephone, and in blocks of 5,000.

The problem is that you are not eligible to transfer from Amtrak to any other program unless you meet the criteria mentioned below, and even then the amount that can be transferred is capped:

If you meet these criteria you can transfer the specified amount of points to a hotel program (Choice Privileges), and then transfer again to AA, but there will be a substantial loss in value:

5,000 OnePass
=5,000 Amtrak Guest Rewards
=15,000 Choice Priviliges
= 3,000 AAdvantage

If I don't meet the criteria listed (I'm not currently an Amtrak member), am I out of luck or do I have any other options?

No good options.

If you sign up for points.com, you can transfer points at a rate of 45,530 Continental miles = 10,000 AA miles. You will always lose a lot of your program value in these transfers, that is how they make their profit. But it doesn't cost any cash.

If you met the criteria to view the Flyertalk Coupon Connection forum (180 posts and 180 days of membership) you could offer to trade someone a Continental award for an American Airlines award. It won't get points into your account though.

Sorry this is OT, but where is the Coupon Connection located? Does it appear automatically when I reach 180 posts?

I do not see why you would want to do this. Even if you are not a CO flyer, 50K CO miles would be much more usable than 30K AA miles.

Have you considered other options to gain more AA miles? Do you have a SPG Amex? For spending $5,000, you get 30,000 SPG points, which transfer free to AA at a rate of 20,000 SPG = 25,000 AA miles. You can apply for the personal and business SPG Amex simultaneously if you can meet the minimum spend. I'm assuming you have an AA personal card, but you may be able to get the AA business card as well, even if you don't have a business, by applying as a sole proprietorship.

Continental no longer exists as of a few days ago! It's all United now.

Anyway, the best redemption option for AA is to two hotel programs (Hilton HHonors and Priority Club), through redeemaamiles.points.com.

And I hope you have at least 25k AA miles. Because:
To do a transfer to any other airline from AA, you'd have to transfer to one of those hotel programs, and then from that hotel program on to the airline. That would result in about a 4/5 loss (ie, you'd only get about 1/5 of the miles over at another airlne that you have at AA). So I'd say it's not worth it.

Either transfer your AA miles to one of these two hotel programs (HH is probably the better value if you use it, but if you only use Priority Club then presumably transfer there) and use them for hotel stays, or at AA's site redeem miles for hotels or rental cars.
