I think you had some opportunity with the Citi apps.
I didn't apply for the AA Amex 75k because I doubted I could spend $7000 in six months. $3000 is ok ($1500x2) but an added $4000 for the Amex was too much (and I'm not in the mood to giftcard my way though $4000). Plus, I doubted whether the business card app would still be online 65 days later...

Bonus after 7/19 will be considered the same for United and Continental.
I applied in August... ugh that sucks! I didn't know that. So you're saying I am now considered a United card holder and am not eligible for "first time cardholder" bonuses, even though I only have CO cards? Bummer... I'll try to call Chase for the United card app today and get them to reconsider, although perhaps too much time has passed since my app. We'll see.

These cards are a good reason to never close an account in anger as well.
That was perhaps my biggest mistake. I did that with the BofA Alaska card. Of course, 250k miles (and my dream of a trip in Cathay FC!) gives enough happiness to offset the regret :)

The reason you only had 4 pulls, was because multiple apps with one bank on a single day will result in a single pull.

Great tips! Thanks.

I'm a noob here. My questions is, after you get the miles and decide to cancel the card, how do you retain the "points/miles?" For example, if I have a Chase Visa and I get XXX Points after a certain amount of purchase, then I cancel the card, how to I still have it? Are the points still posted online without the card?

Thanks!

You generally get to keep the points upon cancellation, except with proprietary points like Membership Rewards which vanish if you have not converted them elsewhere first. Be careful about that.

You also do not want to abuse this too much; they keep records on who cancels and are getting more stringent, especially Chase.

You don't want to get on a blacklist, by trying to be as "efficient" as possible.

And besides - the 40k deal had been over and done for quite some time. Getting upset with BoA because they wouldn't extend the deal for you is a bit over the top.

Also, if you ever cancel a card, have the credit line added to another card first. That way your fico score will not be impacted.
