$25k purchase, which card to put on?

I'm planning to put a large purchase on my credit card within the next month or so and was wondering which card to put it on? I was thinking about the BA card for the 2 for 1 voucher because I'll earn additional (25%) miles on top of the 25k miles earned for the charge.

CO will only give me 10k bonus mile for $25k spent.

Any other card out there that would give me greater value/benefits?

Are you planning to pay off the balance immediately or in monthly installments?

Assuming you're paying it off in installments and without knowing which cards you actually own, I would have to suggest you use the CC with the lowest APR for such a large purchase. I would use this as the initial criteria and then I'd think about the value of the points program.

If status helps your situation, the US Airways card will count 10,000 of those 25,000 miles as EQM.

Why not split the charge across multiple credit cards? This way you can spending thresholds on say 3-4 credit card promos, vs. just 1? E.G., you could get the 2 (or 3) of the Citi 75K AA bonuses, Chase Sapphire Preferred 100K points, etc.

For me right now if I had that much to spend, I would apply enough to hit the Starwood card for $15K of spend and hit that threshold for 40K points (10K signup, 15K bonus, and 15K spend), and with the remaining $10K get the Chase Sapphire Preferred (100K point match), and at least 1 Citi AA card. So same 25K spend = 40K Starwood, 100K Chase (good for Hyatt, CO, etc.), and another 75K AA.

What a great thread, I learn something here all the time!

Doesn't one of the Hilton cards give you Gold status at 25K. Not sure if you need it or got it for free with thier promo but is another option.

Maybe someone has done a chart for bonuses at $25K on the different cards. That sounds like something thepointsguy would do. He is very good at breaking down things like that.

This may seem antithetical to the MilesBuzz forum, but is this a purchase you can make in cash? When I make large purchases (over a few thousand dollars) I usually ask the merchant if I can get a discount for paying in cash. Merchants often pay 3% of the purchase price, so I ask them if they will give me a 2.5% discount and keep the extra 0.5% for themselves. In this case you might save yourself over $500.

I also second shanshan's suggestion; spread it across several cards to meet the spend on multiple bonuses. You could easily tally more than $500 worth of rewards that way.

the premier rewards gold will also give you 15k bonus points once you eclipse $30k in annual spending, so this pretty much takes care of that right there. and for me, this would likely be my only option, since i think the max credit line on any single one of my credit cards is about $20k, so would need the charge card with no pre-set limit

I'll be paying off immediately.

CO Presidential Plus would give you 25,000 reward miles (or more depending on what/where the purchase is) plus 5,000 EQM.

hqly2001 Jun 27, 2011 6:03 pm

good advice everyone..
It's a one shot deal.. I have the BA card and should meet 30k spent by end of year for the 2 for 1. The CO gives 10k after 25k spent. hm.. if amex gives 15k MR after 25k spent, I might look into that a bit more.
Shappire 100k deal is done. Only 50k is available i think. Let me check that out to see what bonus they are giving out for 25k spend.

it used to say explicitly on the website, although i can't seem to find it now. a simply google search will show lots of sites talking about this benefit, like the one below:
