earning miles while booking award tickets
 

I just booked an award ticket on AA from US to Europe using miles. I can't earn miles on AA I think since it's an award ticket.

Can I earn miles on partner airlines?

No. No miles on award tix.

If you booked the ticket paying tax with your Citi Premier Pass you will actually earn points as if you paid the full fare.

In general, miles aren't earned for award tickets. However, the occasional lucky circumstance yields the exception to this rule.

On two occasions, I've had award flights cancelled on the day before the departure and replaced by flights with non-award booking codes. In such cases, full miles are earned. But you can't really count on this happening!

This is actually well-known for years. Any flight ticket you charge to the Citi PremierPass card (even just a few dollars in award taxes/fees) will earn you the full amount of flight points per the distance of the flights, which can later on be matched 1-1 with purchase points (so, 2 points total per miles flown, if you have the purchase points to match).

I seem to remember seeing some card changes, and I think the Citi PP cards may be going away. I don't see any mention of flight points on the web site anymore.

I booked my first award flight on CO, and paid the taxes with my CO OnePass Plus M/C. On the reservations page, if I look at "print itinerary" it contains this line:

Upon completion of this itinerary, you will earn up to 3,936 OnePass miles.*

Not sure where that came from...

I am searching for an award flight through AA and going to book it very soon. Could we get miles if we pay the tax with our AA card? Thanks!!

Not any more. It seems $50 is a cut-off level since last year. I have a revenue ticket which I paid $34.xx for fare difference and it did not earn flight point despite that revenue ticket has a new ticket number which never has any flight point posted.

Details in the Other Credit Card forum. Citi is doing a wholesale credit card conversion. Things are very different now.

PPE, now Citi Premier, still offers some good perks.

25% discount in flight redemption. 15% discount when calling to book flights (not redemption) with a 3rd party provider. flight pts match stays but EDS now only earns 1.2pt versus 2 pt before.

PP no longer earns flight points.
