Chase Forces Me to Take 30K Conti Miles

Wandered by my Chase branch to ask what happened to 5K of the Conti miles I was supposed to have gotten six months ago when I opened two accts per an offer for 25K each. All had posted except for 5K.

Problem was corrected, sorta, Chase claimed I was only owed 2.5K, but, the nice lady told me that I was pre-approved for most any Chase credit and that she would process the app for me right then and there.

I thought this was a little odd since Chase had turned me (me! with my great credit score and big bucks! :D) down for a Conti card a few months ago based on what appeared to be reasoning done by untrained mice.

Nonetheless, decided I would take a new Conti card with 25K bonus and 5K for adding an authorized user (was also offered a SW card with 16 bonus whatevers and no fee for first year and several other cards). Got instant approval and am happy I went by Chase. ^

Maybe you should visit Chase too and see if you are pre-approved?

has the latest 25k bonus posted yet? i thought it was only for 1st time cardholders.

I am a first time cardholder for Conti.

Indeed, one of the reasons I liked this deal is that it is a way to get some extra United miles as of next year when the programs are merged. And, I have had several UAL credit card accounts.

His other CO bonus was for a checking acct. I believe. :) You can get two of those per year for 25K each (one personal & one business) unless things have changed.

I just signed up for the personal and business checking accounts to get 25k miles each. The fine print says one per customer, per year - so this may still be the case.

My question would be, does it count when you sign up or when the miles post? i.e., the miles are likely going to post in 2011, but I signed up as a customer in 2010 - so does that mean I have to wait to 2012 to do it again?

I have never had a chase credit or checking account before. Just signed up for the checking account for the bonus miles and when I was in the branch the next day, I got this same thing - you are pre-approved for the continental onepass card with 25k bonus + 5k miles for auth. user.

The bank rep + the bank manager both told me that since I was pre-approved and if I sign up for the credit card at the bank - that it would NOT result in another hard-pull on my credit report. I am of course weary that this is not the case, but was wondering if you had the same experience and/or monitor your credit to see if they did do a hard pull or not?

ps - the only thing is that online you get a $50 statement credit for that card, but that was not showing up as a published benefit on the card offered at the bank. All other rewards/benefits were the same.

Opening bank accounts dont have hard pull - they only do a Chex inquiry which is not the credit report inquiry.

Opening a credit card DOES incur a hard pull even pre-approved. We were offered the CO cards as pre-approved as well when we opened our checking accounts. The banker DID confirm my suspicion that the card application WILL generate a hard pull. The pre-approved offer is not as generous as the online / emailed offers we got so we declined the pre-approved ones at the bank.

Other notes about the checking accounts - there is an existing, long-running thread on that topic, in this forum as well as in CO forum. You will find a lot more info on this topic including answers to your questions.

Sadly, all signs so far point to there will be NO such offer in 2011. You can read about all these in the afore-mentioned threads.

okay, thanks for the info. I had a feeling it would be a hard pull and the bank manager was wrong - but he was trying to convince me he was right!

I don't know if there was hard pull or not since I haven't looked lately. But, the pre-approved part was attractive to me because of the previous denial of a Conti Chase card.

I know there are better offers out there--but, at least I got this one--and before the Conti cards disappear. :D

It's likely to be irrelevant either way. The brand named Continental is not likely to exist by 2012 (merged with United and taking the United name by then for the combination of the two airlines).

The flurry of Continental stuff right now is because for some limited time yet to go, you can apply for both Continental and United stuff and it doesn't yet count against each other. Once the merger gets further, Continental stuff will disappear, and by then you won't able to "double dip" by applying for a Continental card and a United card (and having all those bonus miles eventually end up in the same account once the two airlines merge FF accounts).

I'd put some bets on the fact that Chase will start giving out 25,000 United miles to open up personal/biz accounts, at least that would make sense as they won't have Continental miles to give.

I was wondering the same thing, I opened up an account in late December, my miles will post in 2011. Do I have to wait till 2012 to open a new account, or can I close in Feb/March and open another one later in 2011? Assuming that Continental promo will still be on, if not, then it won't really matter...

Best,

PedroNY

From the surveys we received, this seems to be a remote probability. We received 2 completely different surveys.

Chase is testing the customer reactions by way of these surveys on their products in the work. None in the work has any sign up bonus larger than 2,500 miles. Some of them do not have sign up bonus at all.

Chase will CEASE the benefit of free check bag on the airline debit card effective April 2011.

By a WSJ report, Chase will also STOP issuing airline debit cards sometime in 2011. Though I suspect it will, but with a very different type of benefits, and a HIGHER price tag.

data points

FWIW, I opened aChase personal checking in Sept of 09 and business in Nov of 09. I know for certain that some of the miles posted in 10 for the biz account. (They post in increments rather than all 25k at once). Opened new accounts (personal and biz) in Feb of 10, and all miles posted without any trouble.
