United increases segments needed for !K
As a "bonus" for merging with Continental, United has changed the number of segments needed to become 1k to 120 per year. They did not apparently change the mileage requirement.
Short domestic flights are easily as expensive over time as the international ones, and the hassle for the flyer is a lot more. this is a big deal "breaker" for staying loyal to United, or for that matter Continental. Let's all UNITE to tell United what we think about this.:( |

This is unfair!
While I never earn my status through segments, I have always admired those who do because you are suffering through way more aggravation than us long-haul fliers. I absolutely agree that you guys are paying more than your fair share in revenue generation as well. I don't know this to be a fact, but I would guess, if you have to fly primarily for business, that your CPM yield is higher than international. I don't believe this to be true of leisure flyers, however.
When I saw this announcement presented as if it was good news, I laughed. My initial thoughts were, "this sucks" and "poor b@stards". I would also point out that there are usually a bunch of cheaper options than United available domestically, so you guys are paying a lot extra to be loyal than us international fliers. What a slap in the face! Good Luck! |
It is indeed a slap on the face for those of us who fly a lot domestically. Not only there is more airport hassle, but also more chances for something to go wrong such as a mechanical or weather delay.

Dang, if you earn 1K status with segments, hats off. Any rationale for the change?

I like the news very much! It is still too easy for Milage Plus customers getting a frequent flyer status. And all the benefits these "frequent flyer" get, even silver card holder. Good job, UA! In my own opinion: Double the required segments! ^

Since you generalize...same could be said via miles. As with one long MR, you could get the first level of elite status (or very close depending on how good you are at MRs). If you're actually saying "it's too easy" to get to 1K status via segments, you have very flawed logic. 100 segments = 1 flight / week (2 weeks off for std vacation). Flying EVERY week, it should actually be less segments to obtain the various levels. |
I'm just curious what FT'ers think a "fair" segment qual would be. If one has to connect, then one can make 1K by flying two round trips per month plus an extra. Is that 1K-worthy? I have no clue. OTOH, surely, 1 round-trip per week is 1K worthy. So if one never connects, he's only reaching 104 segments annually. If I were the later, I'd actually be pretty pissed -- I'd have to obtain *16* additional segments, or *8* round-trips. AND THAT'S ON TOP OF FLYING EVERY G-D WEEK OF THE YEAR WITH NO TIME OFF!
There really is such a thing as too much flying -- especially domestically -- and if I were the later crowd, I'd be looking for an AA status match yesterday. |
Just wanted to welcome & thank lurker hwoodard on his 1st post ^
before the mods move this to the United forum |
Since the topic is about a specific frequent flyer program, please continue that discussion in the United forum in the thread linked in post #2 above.
